Officer Requirements Included in the following packet is the necessary paperwork that must be completed prior to your officer’s participation in the initial D.A.R.E. Officers Training (DOT). This years training will be held July 26 - August 6 at the American Heritage School of South Jordan, 11100 South Redwood Road, South Jordan Utah (suburb of Salt Lake City Utah). A block of rooms has been reserved at the LaQuinta Inn & Suites at (385) 448-8000 for the rate of $89 per night plus applicable taxes. Call and ask for the D.A.R.E. block to reserve rooms. Cut off for this special rate is July 19th at the close of business. For those needing flights, there are several airlines that fly into the Salt Lake International Airport (located 25-30 minutes from the training site). We will arrange pick-up if requested. Academy lodging could become available (depending upon the status of COVID-19. Please indicate your interest in this housing and your name will be placed on a waiting list for space if it becomes an option. In order to be fair to all applicants, completed paperwork must be emailed to tibbyuccp@aol.com or mailed to Tibby Milne at 1351 East Millbrook Way, Bountiful, Utah 84010 by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 16th. After that date, training slots will be open to other agencies that are on the waiting list. Please read all paperwork carefully. If you have contacted us regarding a space in our training, we have temporarily assigned you training slot. In the event that your agency representative will not be attending, please let us know ASAP. The cost for the two-week training is $400.00 per candidate. For your convenience, we accept three methods of payment. Make checks payable to the Power of Prevention Coalition at the address listed above. Purchase orders will be accepted if received by the above date. We accept credit cards. Certification for the training will be received upon successful completion of the class. 2 The facilitator for the training will be Kim Hawkes, Region Director D.A.R.E. America. Joining him will be the Utah D.A.R.E. Training Cadre of Educators and Mentor offices. All candidates are expected to be punctual to class beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, July 26 dressed in duty uniform (no exceptions). Class pictures will be taken on the first day of training. Your uniform will be required periodically during the two-week training. Appropriate dress during the rest of the time will be slacks (no Levi’s) and shirts with collars. Spouses/significant others/families will be invited to join the D.A.R.E. Officers in an evening class event on Thursday, August 5, 2021 (time & location TBD). In addition, we want to invite immediate family members, D.A.R.E. Supervisors, law enforcement administrators, and other agency D.A.R.E. Officers to attend the D.A.R.E. Officer Graduation at the end of the training on Friday afternoon, August 6, 2021 (time and location to be announced). Agencies should be aware that upon completion of the 80-hour course, new D.A.R.E. Officers will be certified in the K-4 and Elementary “Keeping it REAL”, Jr. High/MS as well as High School curriculums; special D.A.R.E. Enhancement Lessons for Jr. High/MS and High School students as well as specialized School Resource Officer training and skills. It is an honor and a privilege to be selected by an agency to serve as a D.A.R.E. Officer. Officers often comment on this as being their best training and assignment within their law enforcement experience. We at the Utah D.A.R.E. Enhancement lessons: vaping, Rx OTC, opioid abuse, mental health 'More Than Sad, 'Anti-bullying curricula. 3 D.A.R.E. AMERICA NATIONALPOLICY AND PROCEDURES SUBJECT: SELECTION OF D.A.R.E. OFFICER CANDIDATES PURPOSE: To establish guidelines for selecting a D.A.R.E. Instructor candidate who will maintain the integrity of the D.A.R.E. program. POLICY A D.A.R.E. Instructor must be a uniformed law enforcement officer, meeting the minimum training standards for peace officer status in their state of residence, and completed the equivalent of two years as a peace officer with full police powers. Additionally, the D.A.R.E. Instructor candidate’s employing police agency shall have a memorandum of understanding with concerned school district(s) allowing implementation of D.A.R.E. after completion of the candidate’s training. PROCEDURE: 1. The following delineates specific areas which shall be considered when selecting a candidate: a. Demonstrated ability to interact and relate to children b. Oral and written communication skills that are adaptable to age-specific audiences c. Ability to organize d. Responsiveness to instruction e. Ability to develop personal relationships f. Promptness g. Exemplary role model in both formal and informal situations h. One who refrains from sexual, racial, stereotyping or inappropriate and insensitive remarks i. Training policy concerning the intended purpose for officer training. POLICY The Utah D.A.R.E Training Center exists to provide certification training to uniformed law enforcement officers who will be teaching the D.A.R.E. curriculum in the classrooms. We ask that you enroll only officers that will be teaching in the next semester. (D.A.R.E. Training is skills training; if those skills are not used, they will be lost.) We ask that you permit your D.A.R.E. Officer to teach the entire 10-week curriculum. Alternating instructors interferes with the rapport building between the officer and students, a key element in the success of the program. If your officer is to be a relief/substitute officer, it is our hope that you will allow that officer to teach a semester before assigning them to a substitute role. Again, it is very important for trainees to exercise learned skills immediately following the training. PROGRAM (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) D.A.R.E. is a research based prevention curriculum developed by educators and taught by uniformed police officers. The program has been very successful. Its success is based upon the uniting of two of society’s most influential entities: law enforcement officers and education. The success of the program requires that a mutual commitment be established between those agencies involved. The signing of this agreement establishes the mutual commitment of police and school personnel to provide our children with the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to resist the pressures to experiment with drugs and alcohol. Items which are to be considered are listed on the previous page. THE AGREEMENT We, the undersigned, are committed to work together to provide the D.A.R.E curriculum to the children of our community. THANK YOU 10 DRUG ABUSE RESISTANCE EDUCATION D.A.R.E. PROGRAM CODE OF CONDUCT Maintaining the continuity and integrity of the National D.A.R.E. program is the responsibility of D.A.R.E. America/ International, each D.A.R.E. Instructor, and every affiliate member. Instructors who become certificated D.A.R.E. instructors by successfully completing D.A.R.E. curriculum training, and all affiliated members are required to adhere to the D.A.R.E. Officer's Code of Conduct. This code of conduct shall ensure that all instructors certificated to deliver D.A.R.E. curricula, and affiliate members present themselves as positive role models and represent the D.A.R.E. program in an appropriate manner. CODE OF CONDUCT I understand that certification to present the D.A.R.E. curriculum is a privilege, not a right and that I may only present those curricula for which I have been certificated. Violations of the following standards may result in decertification and loss of the privilege to present D.A.R.E. curriculum or be affiliated with D.A.R.E. 1. Criminal Misconduct 2. Administrative misconduct, including but not limited to: Knowingly failing to comply with established national or regional policies and procedures. Unbecoming Conduct The instructor or affiliated member is the most visible representative of the D.A.R.E. program. Each involved individual represents all who have and continue to contribute to the program. As a highly visible member of the community, the conduct of all persons affiliated with D.A.R.E. is closely scrutinized, and actions on and off duty reflect directly upon the public's perception of the program. Instructors certified to present D.A.R.E. curriculum and affiliated members must conduct themselves in a respectful, courteous, ethical, moral, and professional manner with complete obedience to the law not bringing discredit to themselves, their employing agency, the law enforcement profession, the military, D.A.R.E. America/International, or the overall D.A.R.E. program. 4. Violations of Trademark and Copyright Laws Instructors certificated to instruct D.A.R.E. curriculum and affiliated members shall not violate the D.A.R.E. America/International Trademark Infringement Policy which states, "No local production of any D.A.R.E. merchandise may be undertaken. Only authorized licensed vendors of D.A.R.E. America/International may use the D.A.R.E. name or family of D.A.R.E. trademarks on D.A.R.E. items or promotional items. Any person (including a police officer/or authorized military member) who utilizes any of these trademarks on merchandise, promotional items, or in publications without the written consent of D.A.R.E.
