Group Graphic Novel Report 100 Points Due 4/17-18 Your group will construct a Google Slides presentation that you will share with the class in a timed 7-10 minute presentation. You will provide background on your graphic novel and its author(s), as well as an analysis of your graphic novel according to the principles we learned in Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics. In general, your presentation should: ● ● ● ● ● Have a coherent and visually appealing style Balance text and images Use text we can read (also don’t write every word on the slide that you plan to say) Be well-rehearsed and professionally presented Equally include every group member’s participation The grading rubric is on the reverse side of this handout. Please use the following format for your Google Slides deck: Slide 1 Provide a brief synopsis of your graphic novel. Share the cover art. Think of this as a dust jacket blurb (but be sure to write your own—no spoilers and no plagiarism). Slide 2 Tell us a little biographical background on the author(s)/artist(s) and their body of work. Do some research; what are they known for? What else have they created? What kind of person are they? Do they have a large fan base? Do they have a social media presence? Slides 3-6+ Analyze your graphic novel according to the topics in your “Literature Circle Roles” worksheet packet. Address each bullet point from page 2 of the packet. This is a truly collaborative project; it will not work to simply divide the work four ways. Your group will need to discuss and synthesize your notes on each topic to decide what kinds of patterns (and anomalies) appear across the entire graphic novel. For each of the four topics, you must provide at least one example from the text. Show us with high-quality scans of the artwork (use a scanning app; do not simply take pictures) and tell us (briefly) with words. Slide 7+ Provide a brief conclusion. What did you think of this graphic novel? Do you recommend it to your classmates? Why or why not? Who might enjoy reading it, and do you have any other thoughts or recommendations? Rubric: Group Graphic Novel Report Category Synopsis, Bio, & Conclusion 4 Topics from “Literature Circle Roles” packets Slide Design Presentation Individual Participation Criteria The synopsis provides a good intro to the book, includes the cover art, and has no spoilers. The bio is informative and thorough. The conclusion provides the group’s parting thoughts and ties the entire presentation together. Points 10 The presentation analyzes all four principles from the “Literature Circle Roles” packets. The presentation includes brief written explanations as well as high-quality scans of the artwork that provide examples to further illustrate the explanations. 40 The deck has a coherent style, is colorful and interesting, and balances text and images. The deck uses readable text and has an appropriate ratio of words written to words spoken. 15 The presentation is well-rehearsed and professionally presented by the entire group. It is 7-10 minutes long. 15 Each group member has contributed equal work and preparation, both during class times and in the presentation itself. 20
