Describe the scope of gerontology and geriatrics. 2. Discuss the practice of Gerontological nursing as a specialty for some nurses and a responsibility for all nurses in adult care settings. 3. Describe the Stages of Change model. 4. Discuss current goals for senior adults as set forth by the Healthy People 2020 initiative. 5. Describe health promotion interventions appropriate in the care of older adults such as screenings, health/safety education, and risk reduction. Learning Objectives, Chapter 8: Assessment of Health and Functioning Upon completion of this lesson, the student will: 1. Discuss factors that contribute to the complexity of assessing older adults. 2. Discuss the concept of atypical presentation among older adults. 3. Describe the ways in which a functional assessment differs from a basic nursing assessment. 4. Define functional status. 5. Explain the purpose of function-focused care. 6. Define comprehensive functional assessment and comprehensive geriatric assessment. 7. List names of common tools/instruments used in assessment of older adult’s ability to perform basic activities, activities of daily living, and instrumental activities of daily living.
