Report to: Head Nurse
Responsible to: Head Nurse and Assistant Director of Nursing
Responsible for: Own nursing practice and duties as indicated in job description. Directs the assigned activities
of the Registered Nurses, Ward Clerk/Interpreters, General Assistants and General Aides.
Liaises with: Medical and nursing staff, hospital support services, patients, families and
visitors.
ACCOUNTABILITY/OBJECTIVES
Assumes responsibility for providing direct patient care, utilizing the nursing process. Provides individualized
nursing care to both pre and post-partum patients including the newborn infant. Responsible for patient care
during labour, conducts deliveries and recognizes abnormal situations and intervenes appropriately until arrival of
the obstetrician. Functions as Midwife-In-charge as assigned, coordinating unit administrative and clinical
functions for that particular shift. Serves on various committees and task forces as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Performs a baseline assessment on admission of all patients including a nursing history of past and present
medical and obstetric history. Performs physical assessment including abdominal palpation and vaginal
examination.
Utilizes knowledge for etiologic, patholphysical and prognosis for gestational period and stages of labour to
formulate nursing/midwifery diagnosis and provide individualized patient care.
Assesses and documents changes in patient status of the expectant mother and the newborn infant.
Establishes priority when providing care for one or more patients.
Intervenes timely in clinical and physiological situations where basic life support systems are threatened.
Intervenes and provides direct patient care in situations which require patient supervision and skilful management
such as in Pre-Eclamptic toxaemia or Eclampsia.
Supervises induction of labour and/or augmentation of labour following Labour Ward Policy and Procedure for
both low risk and high risk patients.
Monitors all patients closely and reports any deviation from the norm regarding the progress in labour and post
partum patients admitted for close monitoring.
Assists physicians with instrumental deliveries.
Assists physicians in medical procedures such as external cephalic version and amniotic fluid reduction.
Attends and receives term newborn infants at elective and emergency caesarean sections.
Maintains patient’s confidentiality and dignity and deals with patients with empathy.
Provides physical assistance and comfort to patients and act as an advocate in the management and relief of
pain for all patients.
Gives appropriate advice/counselling to patients and their partners regarding all aspects of the patient’s care.
Ensures effective communication between all members of the medical midwifery/nursing team regarding the
patient’s care.
Attends required unit and nursing administration staff development activities.
Provides breast feeding education and support.
Collaborates with other members of the health care team including the social worker and patient relations to
provide effective and quality health care services.
Utilizes effective, verbal and written communication and documentation of all nursing assessments, interventions
and evaluations.
Demonstrates professional accountability by actively participating in continuing education programs, unit staff
development activities and a minimum of 8 unit in-services per year. Maintains current Basic Cardiac Life Support
(BCLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications.
Recognizes and performs all midwifery/nursing functions according to the Labour & Delivery scope of practice
and unit policy and procedures.
Acts as a mentor/preceptor for student nurses, midwives and nurse interns
Demonstrates ethical behaviour in the performance of patient care services including communication with other
medical staff concerned regarding the care of the patient’s status while maintaining confidentiality at all times.
Enters and retrieves required patient data from the HBO and MR Viewer Light systems of the computer.
Follows Department of Nursing Standards of Courtesy at all times.
Adheres to hospital dress code and infection control policies and procedures.
Complies with the standards laid down by the Approved National and International Accreditation Agencies.
Reports any occurrence not consistent with the operation of the hospital’s standard of service for patients,
employees or visitors and situations that may put patients, staff or visitors at risk from injury or other harm.
Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of his/her knowledge skills and abilities.
Position Requirements
Bachelor, 3 to 4 Years work experience
Graduate of an accredited Nursing/Midwifery School
Current Professional Nurse/Midwife Registration in Country of Origin
Neonatal Resusitation Program (NRP) Certificate
Basic Audit Techniques
Basic Research Methods
Minimum of two (2) years as General Registered Nurse
Minimum of three (3) years recent labour ward experience
Verbal and written mastery of English language
Problem Solving and Organization Skills
Good Interpersonal Skills
