ORAL REVIEW
Q1.
A1.
What is EDTO?
Extended Diversion Time Operations (EDTO) are those operations conducted by an airplane with
two or more turbine engines where the diversion time to an en-route alternate aerodrome is
greater than the threshold time (60 min) established by the DGCA. (For B737 it is 120 min)
Q2.
What is the Speed Schedule used for EDTO Calculation and at what Aircraft Reference
Weight?
Mach .79 / 330 Kts at a Reference Weight of 75 Tons.
This Speed, with an EDTO clearance of 180min gives an approx. distance of 836 NM.
A2.
Q3.
A3.
What are the 03 EDTO Critical Fuel Requirements?
The 03 EDTO Critical fuel requirements shall satisfy as mentioned below:
The greater amount of fuel sufficient to fly to an EDTO alternate under the following three
scenarios:
Diagram 1.1
1.1)
Pressurization failure + Engine failure - Flight at the approved one-engine-inoperative
cruise speed assuming a rapid decompression and a simultaneous engine failure at the most critical
point followed by descent to a 10,000 ft or a higher altitude if sufficient oxygen (supplemental) will be
available;

1.3)
Engine-out Driftdown - Flight at the approved one-engine-inoperative cruise speed assuming
an engine failure at the most critical point followed by descent to the one-engine-inoperative
cruise altitude.
All three scenarios are calculated at each ETP and the largest diversion fuel requirement
becomes the Critical Fuel required at that ETP

Q4. Factors Determining EDTO Alternate Aerodrome?
A4. EDTO En-route Alternate Aerodrome Determination
a)
An alternate is adequate for the aircraft type used. The following factors shall be
considered for designating an EDTO alternate:
1)
Availability of airport in terms of ground operational assistance (ATC, Meteorological and Air
Information Services);
2)
Distance from destination and fuel required;
3)
Runway length, width, slope and PCN is sufficient to meet aircraft performance
requirements;
4)
Availability of NAVAIDS such as ILS, VOR, GPS RNP approaches (later), NDB (at least one
compatible NAVAID must be available for an instrument approach);
5)
Runway lighting and marking;
6)
Aircraft RFF category - One category below the areophane RFFS category, under the
conditions that aerodrome is in operation (applicable within India) and for outside India at
least 30 minutes notice will be given to the aerodrome operator prior to the arrival of the
areophane;
7)
Arrival restrictions at the airport (e.g. night curfew);
8)
Availability of refueling and Maintenance facilities;
9)
Availability of parking space;
10) Political aspects, if any;
11) Availability of Passenger handling facility, Medical facilities, hotels, connections etc.
b)
Weather forecasts for the airport is equal or exceed EDTO required dispatch weather
minima from the earliest time of landing to the latest time of landing at that airport; and
c)
Surface crosswind forecast and runway conditions are within acceptable limits to allow a
safe approach and landing with one engine inoperative.
When the suitability of nominated EDTO en-route alternate airport is ensured, the flight can commence.
However, once in-flight, EDTO flight shall not be continued in the events of the nominated alternate
becoming unavailable unless a redundant suitable EDTO En-route alternate airport is available or a
modification of the routing is done.
Note: Delayed Dispatch: If the dispatch of a flight is delayed by more than one hour, Pilots and/or
Flight Dispatch should monitor weather forecasts and airport status at the nominated en-route alternates
to ensure that they stay within the specified planning minima requirements until dispatch.

ORAL REVIEW
Q5. What is the Period of Validity of EDTO En-route Alternate Airport?
A5. The earliest and the latest estimated time of arrival at the declared EDTO en-route alternate
aerodrome(s) can be determined as the following:

Earliest ETA: The earliest ETA at the nominated EDTO en-route alternate aerodrome(s) is
computed considering a diversion from ETP 1 along the outbound route associated with the
declared en-route alternate, at the normally planned cruise altitude and speed (i.e. assuming a
diversion for any reason other than an engine or pressurization failure).

Take-off time + Flight time to ETP 1 + Estimate elapsed time from ETP 1 to EDTO Alternate
Aerodrome

Latest ETA: The latest ETA is computed considering a diversion from ETP 2 associated with the
declared en-route alternate, at FL 100 or MORA, whichever is higher, and at the LRC speed (i.e.
considering a pressurization failure only).

Take-off time + Flight time to ETP 2 + Estimate elapsed time from ETP 2 to EDTO Alternate
Aerodrome
A graphical depiction of the Period of Validity is shown in the figure below

EDTO B737 FLIGHT CREW PROCEDURES
PAGE
1
DECEMBER 05, 2014
Planning an EDTO flight requires an understanding of the area of operations, critical fuel reserves, altitude capability,
cruise performance tables and icing penalties.
The actual operation of flights under EDTO regulations involves additional emphasis to the following aspects of flight
crew procedures for safe and efficient operation.
1. Dispatch
4. Diversion decision making
2. Pre-flight cockpit preparation
5. Post flight
3. In-flight EDTO procedures
1. Dispatch
The areas to be reviewed with special emphasis are:
a) Airplane Technical Log
• Flight crew should study the limitations requirements and additional MEL (ER) as applicable and review the
airplane status.
• The commander shall ensure that the qualified engineering personnel have completed the EDTO
serviceability check. A high degree of teamwork between flight operations and engineering personnel would
greatly enhance the safety and efficiency of operation at every stage of the flight.
b) Documentation
• Study of Navigation charts/approach plates.
• Check EDTO flight plan:
o Critical Fuel Requirement vs. FOB
o Alternate Airport List
o Confirm Area of operation (Navigation charts indicating the area of EDTO area of operations schematic)
c) Weather and NOTAMS
• The EDTO alternate weather minimum is a function of the landing aids available at the alternate.
• Ensure enroute alternate suitability as below:
o EDTO weather minimums as per EDTO alternates and Minima list
o Ensure period of validity from Earliest Time of Arrival to Latest Time of Arrival
d) Fuel uplift
• Adjust the fuel load based on the above factors and the critical fuel scenario. Fuel corrections must be made
for winds, non-standard atmospheric conditions, performance deterioration caused by engines or airframe,
and (if applicable) flight through forecast icing conditions.
• Compare the EDTO critical fuel planning (EDTO critical fuel scenario) to the standard fuel planning computed
in accordance with the company fuel policy and applicable operational requirements.
• Minimum fuel for the flight will be higher of the two above.
2. Pre-flight cockpit preparation
• All FMS preparations are to be cross-checked by both pilots as for non- EDTO operations. All track and
distance between waypoints are to be verified.
• The EEP, ETP(s) and the EOP are not part of the FMS flight plan but shall be stored as waypoints; this
information shall be used as fix info only to retrieve time and distance.
• Insert enroute alternate airports on the FIX page and update them as the flight progresses.
• Check EDTO critical systems as applicable.
• Wind entries should be performed on all the relevant pages to ensure dependable fuel and time predictions
along the flight and during diversion.
• Perform an operational check of the fuel cross feed valve prior to each EDTO flight.
EDTO B737 FLIGHT CREW PROCEDURES
PAGE
2
DECEMBER 05, 2014
3. In-flight EDTO procedures
a) General
• Maintain awareness of any system failure impact on EDTO sector.
• Monitor fuel with critical fuel scenario in mind.
• For EDTO flight, as for normal flight, Non-normal procedures are performed using the standard non-normal
checklist.
b) Before EDTO Entry Point (EEP)
• Start APU (APU must be operating prior to EDTO entry point and left ON in the EDTO segment. If the APU
subsequently fails in the EDTO portion of flight a diversion is not necessarily required). If authorised, APU
may not require to be started.
• Obtain weather reports for enroute alternates and ensure the above normal company minima (If weather
forecasts are lower than the normal company minima then re-routing or a turn-back is required as
applicable). Once the flight has entered extended range segment, if the forecast for the en-route alternate is
revised to below the normal published minima, the flight may continue to Destination at Captain’s
discretion.
• Tune in for communication capability as appropriate (HF / Stockholm Radio).
• Check BRG/DIST and FUEL/TIME to next alternate.
c) Passing ETP
• Check next diversion airport weather.
• Check BRG/DIST to next diversion airport.
• Check Fuel and time estimate to next ETP.
Note: If the estimated Fuel On Board (FOB) at the CP is lower than the fuel required by the critical fuel scenario,
there is no requirement to make a diversion, provided the estimated fuel at destination is above the minimum
required by the company fuel policy. In such a situation, Captain to file a special report post flight.
d) Passing EDTO Exit Point (EOP)
• Shut down APU, if started.
• Perform an operational check of the fuel cross feed valve during the last hour of cruise flight.
4. Diversion Decision Making
• In the event of an enroute event, the crew will have to decide whether to continue, divert or turn back. This
decision is based on the circumstances at the time of event. Flight crew should maintain situational
awareness at all times. In case of diversion, deal the emergency as with any other (non-EDTO) diversion
situation.
• The criteria governing a re-routing or diversion decision can be classified as follows:
o Required alternates unavailable or unsuitable for use.
o Loss of MNPS or RVSM capability, before entering the area (as applicable).
o Failure cases requiring diversion to the nearest suitable airport (QRH non-normal calling for “land at
nearest suitable airport”).
o Excessive fuel consumption, exceeding the available fuel reserves.
Note 1: In case of a cargo fire, diversion to the nearest suitable airport is mandatory whatever is the performance in
terms of protection time of the fire extinguishing system.
Note 2: Whatever the one engine inoperative speed schedule assumed in the determination of the area of
operation, the crew is free to adopt the strategy which is considered as the most appropriate after assessment of the
overall situation. This means that in conducting the diversion the application of the pre-planned speed strategy is
not mandatory.
5. Post Flight
• Advise dispatch of any fuel planning shortfalls (Critical Fuel).
• Report any failures that can affect subsequent EDTO flights.

#This value is calculated as 1.15 * ALD. EFB OPT depicts this as
Operational Landing Distance and OPT output has the 15% margin
includ both for Normal and Non-Normal configurations. QRH Normal
configurati landing distances are with 15% margin. QRH Non-Normal
configuration l distances are without factor and thus 15 % margin
needs to be added. These distances should be calculated for actual
landing conditions.
