HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH
(From Anglo-Saxon to Global English)
The English language is a West Germanic language that originated in England. It is the third most spoken
language in the world after mandarin Chinese and Spanish.English has been influenced by a number of other
languages over the centuries including, Olde Norse, Latin, French and Dutch.
The earliest forms of English were spoken by the anglo-saxon, who settled in England in the 5th century.
The Anglo-Saxons were a mix of germanic tribes of Scandinavia and Germany.
Anglo-saxon is also know as old English.
OLD ENGLISH PERIOD (500-1100)
The old English period began in 449 AD with the arrival of three Germanic tribes from the continent: Angles, Saxons,
and Jutes. They settled in the south and east of Britain, which was then inhabited by the celts.
The Anglo Saxons had their own language called Old English, which was spoken from around the 5th century to 11th
century.
MIDDLE ENGLISH PERIOD (1100-1500)
The second stage of the English language, which was spoken from around the 12th century to tye late 15th
century.Middle English emerged after the Norman Conquest of 1066, when the Norman's conquered England.
Middle English language is often divided into two periods:
1. Early middle English (11th-13th centuries)
2. Late middle English (14th-15th centuries)
MODERN ENGLISH PERIOD (1500-Present)
The third stage of english language is known as modern English l, which began in the 16th century and continues to
the present day.
Today, English is spoken by an estimated 1.5 billion people around the world .
