INTRODUCTION
Education is a light that shows the mankind the right direction to surge.
The purpose of education is not just making a student literate but adds
rationale thinking, knowledgeably and self-sufficiency. When there is a
willingness to change, there is hope for progress in any field. Creativity
can be developed and innovations both students and teachers.
Teaching method is the mechanism that is used by the teacher to
organize and implement a number of educational means and activities
to achieve certain goals. Teaching techniques are the means that reflect
the success of the learning process and the competencies of the
teacher. Being a teacher, I always need to look for new ways to deliver
knowledge to my learner, and in many occasions, I found that
traditional teaching methods become not effective as it used to be due
to the current advancement in technology.
Teaching becomes more effectives when it performed in a quicker
response to the needs of the learner, so that blending various
techniques to deliver knowledge and ideas become necessary.
This paper presents the characteristics of many teaching methods
including.
IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION
“Education is the manifestation of perfection already in man” – (Swami
Vivekananda). Education is an engine for the growth and progress of
any society. It not only imparts knowledge, skills and inculcates values,
but is also responsible for building human capital which breeds, drives
2
and sets technological innovation and economic growth. In today’s era,
information and knowledge stand out as very important and critical
input for growth and survival. Rather than looking at education simply
as a means of achieving social upliftment, the society must view
education also as an engine of advancement in an information era
propelled by its wheels of knowledge and research leading to
development.
TEACHING METHODS
There are many teaching methods but this write-up will consider two
Demonstration Method
This method involves the presentation of a pre-arranged series of
events to a group for their observation. This is accompanied by
explanatory remarks. This method is most commonly used in science
and fine arts. It can be used in giving information, training and
knowledge. Anderson (1903:9), further contributed that, ―the
demonstrations should be selected both in terms of the needs of the
observers as well as the ideas, materials, procedures or techniques
which can be observed profitably.
Advantages Of Demonstration
i.
The demonstrations can open a student’s eye to a new world of
understanding.
ii.
The demonstration shortens the time for learning and lengthens
the memory of facts and principles.
3
iii.
The demonstration is quite effective in making clear to the
participants and observers the relationship between skills and
their purpose.
iv.
The demonstrations foster good thinking in group and
individuals.
v.
The demonstration aids in bringing about a relationship between
the theory and practice.
vi.
Thus, demonstration, if it is well planned, conducted and
followed, can be a useful approach in teaching.
Disadvantages
The possible limitation of this teaching method include
i.
It has no permanent record; one can be too slow or fast. ii. It
can be expensive in terms of material costs. iii. It can be too
long and in consequence, learners may lose interest.
ii.
Teachers need a lot of time to rehearse. To make this method
improved
and
successful,
a
teacher
must
plan
the
demonstrations in great detail and rehearse it; make sure that
all the material and illustrations are nearby when the
demonstrations begins; and a teacher must break down the
demonstration into a simple step-by-step pattern so that it can
be easily understood by the class.
Possible Solution the Limitation
Sir John (1964:302) added that, ―to enhance this demonstration in a
classroom situation a teacher should proceed with the demonstration
4
slowly so that all the pupils may easily grasp the details, and whenever
possible, involve pupils in the demonstration.
Discussion Method
Apart from lecture method, another type of method of teaching is
known as DISCUSSION METHOD. This is the type of method of teaching
where a teacher gives the all class or different groups within the class.
The teacher can just give a topic to the class or a group to discuss.
Discussion and dialogue represent ides trial between learners and
between learners and teacher. Aims of discussion and dialogue
• This method tends to increase the self-confidence among the
students.
• Increase the ability of proving and convincing.
• Increase the tendency for the subject of study.
• Increase the focusing and concentrating.
• Organize the thinking process.
• Discover errors and correcting them.
• Make students more active and powerful.
• Provoke thinking within dialoguers, which let them criticise their
answers and the answers of the others.
• Discussion helps in interpreting information and makes it clear and
understandable
Discussion method is applicable in the following subjects. Mathematics,
Physics, Chemistry, Geography and History.
5
Advantages
The following are the advantages of discussion methods.
i.
It helps to clarify the difficulties as rising from the lesson.
ii.
It helps to develop students with various skills and abilities. E.g.
skills and abilities such as critical and logical thinking.
iii.
It helps those who are shy to overcome shyness.
iv.
It encourages pupils to research more about the given topic.
v.
A lot of work can be covered by a group if topics are different.
vi.
Suitable for all subjects of study.
vii.
Subjects that are more suitable to be taught by discussion
and dialogue; are those which related to social studies and
social problems like; smoking, revenge, drug addiction and
alcoholic.
viii. Pools ideas and experiences from group.
ix.
Effective after a presentation, film or experience need to be
analyzed.
x.
Allows everyone to participate in an active process.
xi.
Provide
enthusiastic
and
enjoyable
atmosphere
among
participants.
xii.
Participants
gain
communication
and
especially expressing and talking skills.
xiii. Treats well the differences among learners.
6
interaction
skills,
Limitations
Not only that, discussion method of teaching has also the disadvantages
and these include;
i.
ii.
Sometimes learners may not understand the topic fully.
If the discussion methods are used constantly, the teacher
became lazy such that he/she cannot prepare anything to teach
the pupils.
iii.
Slow learners do not discussion in that, they may not
participate much.
iv.
It promotes noise through loud discussion and hence disturbs
other classes.
v.
Need time and efforts (time consuming).
vi.
Need skills in questions construction and in question throwing.
vii.
Not suitable for detailed topics (can get out of the track).
viii. Few people can dominate (other may not participate).
ix.
Not practical with more than 20 people.
x.
Class may get out of order.
Remedy
For discussion method to be improved, the teacher should be able to
control the learners, this is because if the groups are not controlled, it
can result in the nosily discussion which can disturb others class.
However, the teacher should make sure that he/she goes through the
groups to guide the learners when help is needed.
7
In addition to this, the teacher should make sure that in every group
they are representatives who will be able to control the group.
Conclusion
In this study we have presented specifications that must be met by the
teaching method in order to successfully achieve its goals and let
teacher to be more effective so that students can learn better. To
achieve our goals from this study we also present the general
Specifications for the most common teaching methods including the
online education method focusing on the strength and weakness of
each in order to help the teacher to choose the appropriate method to
teach a specified subject successfully. We also provided the most
important features of online teaching as being a program that offer
technology-based instructional environment that expand learning
opportunities and can provide top quality education through a variety
of formats and modalities.
