Picture Analysis • There are different ways to communicate. One way is by using our visual ability to understand things. We can make use of a picture to gain an idea and reflect on its meaning. Another way is by looking at each part of the image which gives us clues as to the meaning of the whole picture. • Learning the Skill: Analyzing the image to form a new meaning. 1. 2. First, is to observe the given picture. Tell what might happen based on your observations. Safety Procedures in the Kitchen Yes! Cooking is fun yet at the same time kitchen safety necessary. There are extremely dangerous hazards and tools and equipment that can be found inside the kitchen premises. Some sharp objects like knives, open fire by the oven, electrical appliances, and even bacteria are some of the examples. Always pay attention to what you’re doing in the kitchen to prevent serious injuries or accidents. It is a good habit to develop and observe basic rules of kitchen awareness and safety. Kitchen awareness means being concern with the ways to prevent probable hazards in the kitchen. Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) was formulated in 1978 by Bureau of Working Conditions in compliance with the constitutional mandate to safeguard the worker’s social and economic well-being, as well as his physical safety and health. Accidents can be avoided by being aware of the different hazards and risks. TYPES OF HAZARDS Safety Hazards: injuries due to unsafe work practices, this can cause immediate accidents. Examples are equipment with hot surfaces and slippery floors. Biological Hazards: Caused by different cross contamination brought by microorganisms like viruses, bacteria, fungi parasites and even pests that make you sick. Chemical Hazards: Solid, liquid, vapour or gaseous substances, dust, fume or mist that can harm your body. Example can be cleaning the kitchen using pesticides. Ergonomic Hazards: includes physiological and psychological demands on the worker, vibration, extreme temperatures, such as repetitive and forceful movements and awkward postures arising from improper work methods and improperly designed workstations, tools, and equipment Physical Hazards: Examples are noise, vibration, energy, weather, electric shock, radiation and pressure According to Government of Canada, 2020: • Hazards define as the source of potential damage, harm or adverse effects on someone • Risk means the chance or probability that a person will be harmed or experience an adverse health effect caused by a hazard. It may also apply to situations with property or equipment loss or harmful effects to the environment. HAZARD CAUSE RISK EFFECT Risk assessment defines as a thorough look at your workplace to identify those things, situations, processes, etc. that may cause harm, particularly to people. Risk assessment is the process where you: Step 1: Identify hazards; Step 2: analyze or evaluate the risk associated with that hazard; and Step 3: determine appropriate ways to eliminate or control the hazard. Risk assessment The following are some specific ways to keep the kitchen area free from hazards and accidents Reduce the Pressure while working 1. Organize the things you need to use in preparing and cooking food items. 2. Never run if you are busy on your work. 3. Focus on your job. Do not think any distractions Ensure proper training 1. To avoid serious injuries, how to store and use the different tools and equipment specially the sharp ones. 2. Use appropriate tools in cooking which it prevent the food from spilling or contamination. 3. Use all the kitchen equipment and appliances by following its manual. 4. Knows the proper procedure in lifting or moving heavy objects and equipment. Fire Prevention 1. Do not leave stovetop dishes unattended while the burner is on as this may cause fire. 2. Remember that water will not work and should not be used when there is a fire in the kitchen stove. Pour baking soda over the flames to smother grease fires. 3. Turn off the gas stove or other appliances appropriately when not in use. 4. Use fire extinguisher when stopping the electrical fire. Call emergency hotline if it doesn’t stop. 5. Dress properly and wear your PPE. Do not cook with loose clothes and keep your hair tied if you don’t want to accidentally catch fire. Prevent Burns 1. Do not use your hands when removing a hot lid from a stovetop dish or handling hot containers, pans etc. 2. Do not let children grab pans or pots while cooking. Make sure to turn the pot handles away from the stove. Adults can’t bump them if they are out of the way Proper Storage 1. Cutting boards should be stored vertically to avoid moisture collection. 2. Make storage for each tool depending on their weight, appearance and material. 3. Make sure the areas where you are storing the equipment are clean, dry and not overcrowded. 4. Use safer chemicals, and get rid of hazardous ones. Store it in locked cabinets away from work areas Sanitation 1. Practice food safety by checking the expiration date of the product, exercise personal hygiene, clean all the utensils and equipment, cook foods in the right temperature, store foods appropriately and etc. 2. Wash your sponge regularly as the germs can live in damp sponges or dish clothes. Soaking the sponge in bleach water is the most effective way to clean them. 3. Clean all the kitchen areas like sink, countertops, tables and etc. regularly to promote and maintain kitchen sanitation. 4. Keep the floor dry by wiping spills immediately.
