1. The new model Mercedes can start from rest and travel 400 m in 16 s.
a. What is the average acceleration during this time?
b. Calculate the final speed of the car in:
i. m/s
ii. km/h
2. A motorcycle starts from rest and accelerates uniformly for 8.0 s. It reaches a final velocity of 16 m/s.
a. What is the acceleration of the motorcycle?
b. What is the average velocity of the motorcycle?
c. How far did the motorcycle travel during the 8.0 s?
3. A space-rocket is launched and accelerates uniformly from rest to 160 m/s in 4.5 s.
a. Calculate the acceleration of the rocket
b. How far does the rocket travel during this time?
c. What is the final velocity of the rocket in km/h?
4. A cyclist is over-taking a bike and increases his speed uniformly from 4.2 m/s to 6.3 m/s in 5.3 s.
a. Calculate the acceleration of the cyclist during this time.
b. How far does the cyclist travel whilst over-taking?
c. What is the average speed of the cyclist during this time?
5. A diver plunges head first into a swimming pool while moving at 28.2 m/s. Upon entering the water,
the diver stops within a distance of 4.00 m above the diving board. Consider the diver being a single
point located at her centre of mass and assume her acceleration through the water is uniform.
a. Calculate the average acceleration of the diver as she travels through the water.
b. How long does the diver take to come to a stop?
c. What is the speed of the diver after she has dived for 2.00 m?
6. A car is travelling along a straight road at a velocity of 75 km/h. In an attempt to avoid an accident, the
driver brakes to a sudden stop.
a. If the reaction time of the driver is 0.25 s, what distance does the car travel while the brakes were
being applied?
b. Once the brakes were applied, the car has an acceleration of – 6.0 m/s2. How far does the car
travel while pulling up?
c. What total distance does the car travel from when the driver notices the danger to when the car
comes to a stop?
7. David is approaching a stoplight and moving at a velocity of 30.0 m/s. The light turns yellow and he
applies the brakes and skids to a stop at an acceleration of – 8.0 m/s2. Determine the displacement of
the car during this process.
8. Sydney is waiting at a stoplight. When the light finally turns green, he accelerated at a rate of 6.0 m/s2
for 4.1 s. Determine his displacement during this time.
9. An engineer is designing the runway for an airport. The lowest acceleration rate of the airplanes is 3.0
m/s2. If the take-off speed of the airplane is 65 m/s, what is the minimum allowed length of the
runway?
