OPERATIONS ON INTEGERS
Addition of Integers
->Adding two integers:
1.With the same sign - add the
positive equivalents and write
down the sum with the common
sign provided with the numbers.
2.With different signs -subtract
the positive equivalents and
write down the difference with
the sign of the number which
has the largest positive
equivalent.
Subtraction of Integers
In subtracting two integers,
change the sign of the second
number which is being
subtracted (subtrahend), and
follow the rules of addition.
Multiplication of Integers
1.Multiplying two integers
a.If both the integers have the
same sign, then the result is
positive.
b.If the integers have different
signs, then the result is negative.
2.Multiplying more than two integer
numbers. (Count the number of
negative integer/s)
a.If the number of negative integers
is even, then the result is positive.
b.If the number of negative integer/s
is odd, then the result is negative.
Division of Integers
The rule is similar to multiplication.
1.Dividing two integers
a. Same sign -the quotient is
positive.
b.Different signs-the quotient is
negative.
Examples:
1. (+4) + (+8) = +12
2. (-5) + (-3) = -8
3. (-5) + (-4) + (-3) = -12
4. (-5) + (+8) = +3
 8–5=3
5. (+4) + (-11) = -7
 11 – 4 = 7
6. (-5)+4+(-3)+8 =
(-8) + 12 = 4
 12 – 8 = 4
7. (+4) - (+8)
= (+4) + (-8) = (-4)
 8–4=4
8. (-5) - (-3)
= (-5) + (+3) = (-2)
5–3=2
9. (+2) x (+4) = +8
10. (-3) x (-5) = +15
11. (+2) x (-3) = -6
12. (-9) x (-7) = -63
13. (+2) x (-3) x (-1) = +6
14. (-7) x (+2) x (-1) x (-3)
= (-42)
15. (2) x (-3) x (-3) x (-1)= -18
16. (2) x (-3) x (2) x (-3) x (-1)
= -36
17. (+10) ÷ (+2) = +5
18. (-9) ÷ (-3) = +3
19. (-10) ÷ (+2) = -5
20. (+8) ÷ (-1) = -8
