•Transfer pumps are used to:

-Empty tank.
-Re-inject oil into an existing production
flowline.
-Boost when there is insufficient pressure to
achieve atomization at the burner

Transfer pumps types:

Positive Displacement or Centrifugal
•Positive displacement pumps employ a moving
piston, or a diaphragm, or a rotor (Rotary pump =
gear or screw), to move a fixed volume of liquid
per revolution of the pump.
•Centrifugal pumps contains a central rotating
wheel, the impeller, to impart high velocity to the
liquid, and then converts to pressure.

•Gear type transfer pump (VIKING):
An electric or diesel engine drives the rotor that drives the
idler.

-The rotor (external
helix with a round
cross-section) & rubber
stator are the keys
components.

•Safety Relief Valve:
-If the discharge line is blocked or closed, pressure builds
up until the motor stalls.
-To avoid a pump part or
discharge line breaks, pumps
are equipped with a SRV that
prevents pressure buildup.

-Flow enters the center of the wheel and it is propelled
radially to the outside.

•Bypass valve:
-It allows some of the flow to be diverted, making it
easier to start the pump and preventing pump
overload.
-It can be used also to control & adjust the flowrate by
diverting some of the flow.

-The 10,000 bbl/d pump requires a high current starting
(200 A).

Using the simplified formula I (Amp) =
-The 10,000 bbl/d pump needs a heavy & expensive
elec.cable.
-If power is not available from the rig, a Generator is
needed.

-Electric pumps must be correctly grounded, cables,
sockets must be in good condition & have a circuit
breaker.
-Rotate the pump shaft by hand to ensure it turns
freely.
-When starting the pump, make sure it turns in the
correct direction.
-Verify that the suction valve is open before starting
the pump. Running the pump without fluid will destroy the
pump.

-Right after starting the pump, bleed off air or vapors
that could be trapped in the pump.
-If the pump does not deliver fluid at the discharge
port within 30 seconds, stop it and verify starting
procedure.
-To ensure that the suction is flooded at all times,
set the tank supplying at sufficient elevation above pump
inlet.
-A check valve must be mounted on the discharge
line to prevent fluid from returning to the pump.

•Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH):

-It is the height of a column of liquid required at the
suction port of a pump to produce a specific output
pressure from the pump.

vacuum condition, the pump will cavitate ----”The number
