TECHNOLOGY STATEMENT:
All in-person and online courses at Gateway use Blackboard which is a learning management
system. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that all Gateway students have a computer with
reliable Internet access. Smart phones, tablets and/or Chromebooks may not provide reliable
access. Course specific technology requirements are outlined below in the “Required Text(s),
Tools and/or Supplies” section.
A computer with the following specs should be sufficient for online learning:
• Macintosh OS X (10.12 or higher) or Windows PC (8 or higher)
• 8 GB RAM or more is highly recommended
• 128 GB of available hard-drive space
• Screen resolution set to 1280 X 1024
• Broadband/high-speed uninterrupted Internet access; minimum speed of 10 Mbps
download, 1.5 Mbps upload
• Webcam, microphone, and speakers

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Provides an overview of database and database management system concepts, internal
design models, normalization, network data models, development tools, and applications..
COURSE OBJECTIVES/COMPETENCIES/LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student can:
1. Define a database and its uses.
2. Describe the difference between traditional files and databases.
3. Define a database management system (DBMS) and describe the services a DBMS
provides to users.
4. Identify and describe the main features of hierarchical, network, and relational database
models.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between logical and physical design.
6. Model a realistic business application using a technology-independent data model.
7. Design and implement a database using the relational model, with emphasis on data
integrity in addition, to security.
8. Define and use the normalization process to further refine the relational table definitions.
9. Demonstrate an understanding of the database administration function.
10. Define and be able to use data definition language, data manipulation language, and
instructions that apply relational algebra.
11. Demonstrate an understanding of distributed database systems.

CLASS ATTENDANCE POLICY:

WITHDRAW POLICY:
From the end of the drop/add period through the official midterm or midsession date, Oct 10 for
this course, a student may withdraw from the course and receive a “W.” From the first day after
midterm or midsession until the last day to withdraw of the session, a student may, at the
instructor’s discretion, withdraw from a course, and the instructor may assign a grade of “W.” The
student must initiate the official withdrawal by filling out an online drop form. No grade will be
reported for a student who withdraws by the last day to drop without a grade. If receiving
financial aid, please consult with the Financial Aid Office prior to withdrawing from classes to
understand how your aid may be affected.
