Offense - An offense is your method to score baskets and get open shots against your opponent Defense - is the act of preventing the offense from scoring. Alley-oop - is an offensive play in basketball in which a player throws the ball mid-air near the basket or bounces off the backboard to pass to a teammate who then performs a shot. Backdoor Cut - is when the defense is overplaying the passing lanes, the wing player can cut behind him and trick out his defender for an open layup. The player with the ball makes the pass at the same time, thus the ball and the cutter arrive at the hoop at the same time. Inbound Pass - is a type of basketball pass that occurs when a player restarts play, a pass from a player who is out of bounds to a player who is on the court, typically on the baseline or sideline. Outlet pass - is when a defensive player rebounds the basketball and passes to a teammate, moving the ball up the floor as they transition into offense. Zone defense - is a defensive strategy in which each defender covers a specified area with the objective of limiting scoring opportunities near the basket. Crossover Dribble - a basketball maneuver in which a player dribbling the ball switches the ball rapidly from one hand to the other, to make a change in direction. Bank shot - is when any shot made where the ball hits the backboard before heading into the net. To execute a bank shot, treat it as though you're taking a jump shot but this time, aim slightly higher by shooting for the backboard. Double team - is a basketball defensive tactic in which an offensive player with the ball will receive simultaneous defensive pressure from a primary defender and a secondary defender with the ultimate objective of limiting scoring opportunities, particularly near the basket or from the perimeter. Double dribble - is a violation in basketball when a player dribbles the ball again after they have already stopped and picked up their dribble. Another form of double dribble is when the player dribbles the ball with both hands at the same time. Floater - is a shot used that looks like an overhand layup. The benefit of this type of shot is it is very difficult for the defense to defend, as the floater is used to shoot over taller players. Smaller basketball players know the value of the floater when playing against the bigger competition. Hook Shot - is a type of shot in basketball where the player is positioned relatively close to the basket and with their body perpendicular to the basket, will gently toss the ball over their shoulder in an upward arc toward the goal. To execute this, position yourself sideways so that your dominant or shooting hand with the ball is farthest from the basket. Transition - is a term used to describe the shift from offense to defense or defense to offense following a change of possession. • Post-up - A player posts up by establishing position close to the ring (usually on the low block) with their back to the basket and their chest facing the perimeter ready to receive a pass. • Technical foul - is any infraction of the rules penalized as a foul which does not involve physical contact during the course of play between opposing players on the court, or is a foul by a non-player.
