SOUND
Sound is made up of sound waves, which are
caused by the transfer of energy through
vibrations on the medium wherein it propagates.
The sound wave is an example of a mechanical
wave as it needs a medium to propagate and can
be classified as a longitudinal wave. Particles of
the medium vibrate back and forth as the sound
energy is carried away from the source.
OTHER CHARACTERISTICS/PROPERTIES
OF SOUND WAVES:
Mechanics
1. A sound will be played pertaining to High pitch sound, low pitch sound, Loudness and
quietness of sound so the students can identify each type of sound.
2. The class will be divided into 4 groups
3. Each group will receive a topic to study:
-High Pitch Sound
- Low Pitch Sound
- Loud Sound
- Quiet Sound
OTHER CHARACTERISTICS/PROPERTIES
OF SOUND WAVES:
4. observe the following characteristic of wave from the Phet simulator provided by the
teacher according to their topic:
For Pitch
- Frequency (High or Low)
- Wavelength (Long or Short)
- Number of Waves (Lots or Few)
For Loudness
- Frequency (High or Low)
- Wavelength (Long or Short)
- Amplitude (High or Low)
OTHER CHARACTERISTICS/PROPERTIES
OF SOUND WAVES:
5. Each Group will have 1 representative to explain
there work
6. This activity will have a 10 mins time limit after all
instructions are given.
• Intensity and loudness are
quantitative and qualitative
descriptors of the energy
carried by the wave. Highamplitude waves are intense
and are sensed as loud sounds.
Low-amplitude sound waves
are sensed as soft sounds. It is
expressed in decibels (Db).
• Sound, like all waves, travels
at a certain speed and has the
properties of frequency and
wavelength.
• Sound waves can travel through
solids, liquids, or gas particles.
Hence, sound waves cannot
propagate in an empty space
like a vacuum. Using the table
below, find which medium the
sound will travel the fastest.

SPEED OF SOUND
The relationship between the speed of sound, its
frequency, and wavelength is the same as for all waves:
Vw=fλ,
where vw is the speed of sound, f is its frequency, and λ is
its wavelength.
Complete the statements about sound waves. Fill in the correct word to complete
each statement.
1. Sound waves are caused by the transfer of ( energy ) through vibrations on
the medium wherein it propagates.
2. Sound waves are mechanical waves since it needs a medium to propagate.
3. Sound waves travel the fastest in solid matter.
5. The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch .
6. The higher the amplitude, the more intense the sound. Hence, the louder the
sound is.
Write true if the statement is correct. If not, write false in the space provided.
______1. Sound waves are produced through the vibrations in the medium.
______ 2. Sound waves can travel through a vacuum.
______ 3. The higher the pitch, the lower the frequency.
______ 4. Sound waves travel the fastest in solid matter.
______ 5. The intensity of the sound is determined by its amplitude. The higher the
amplitude, the louder the sound is,
