THE BEACH KIDS by Mark Halloway
Pollution is dangerous for sea life. For example, plastic bags may
reach the sea and kill fish and other living creatures. People can
cause pollution simply by leaving their rubbish* on the beach instead
of throwing it away in the trash* bin. This makes me angry because
I love the beach - swimming in the sea and relaxing on the sand. But
there is no enjoyment when people don't care about keeping the
beach clean.
I asked my friends what they thought we could do about all the
garbage* on the beach. That's when we started the Beach Kids.
Instead of complaining, we decided to do something about the
problem. Every Friday morning during the summer vacation, we met
to clean up the beach. We walked along the beach collecting trash
and putting it into big trash bags. One morning we filled more than
40 bags!
Cleaning up the beach wasn't easy. Sometimes, we worked for over
three hours. The sun was very hot and the bags were heavy. But it
wasn't only hard work. After we finished cleaning up, we jumped
into the sea and went for a swim. It felt good to have fun after all
that hard work.
Many people thought our work was important and thanked us. Some
people helped us pick up the trash. We even became famous in our
town. We were interviewed on a local radio station and got a prize
from the Mayor for helping keep the beach beautiful. Our families
were proud of us.
Next summer, the Beach Kids plan to collect the trash again, but we
hope that other teenagers at our school will join us. We hope that
people won't leave trash on the beach and that when they see us
working hard they'll remember to keep the beach clean. Then we'll
be able to relax more and really enjoy the beach.

Wild Rides
by Max Miles
For many people, there is only one
reason to go to an amusement park*:
the roller coaster. Some
people call it the "scream machine."
There is a good reason for this . You scream on the way up, on the
way down, and especially when you go upside down.
Professor Rob Chapman from City University interviewed 654
visitors (ages 13-19) in different amusement parks around the U.S.A
. Chapman wanted to find out what teenagers think about riding
roller coasters.
First, Professor Chapman found out that the roller coaster is the
most popular ride. About 80 percent of teenagers think that the
roller coaster is the best ride at the amusement park. Jane Hill, 16,
said, "l like the amusement park because of the roller coaster. It is
my favorite ride. I really like roller coasters because they are
exciting."
Second, Chapman asked riders what makes roller coasters so
exciting. Most riders said that roller coasters were exciting for two
reasons: the speed and the feeling of danger. Bill Green, 19,
explained, "Roller coasters go really fast and feel dangerous but I
know that they are safe. I like the feeling of danger."
Finally, Chapman learned that riders like to sit in different parts of
the roller coaster. There are three kinds of riders and each kind
has a name. (See the graph)
The Crazy Riders always sit in the front and put their hands up in
the air. The Safe Riders prefer sitting in the middle where it is less
frightening. The Noisy Riders sit anywhere and scream from the
beginning to the end of the ride. However, people who do not like to
ride roller coasters also have a name. They are called Ground Riders!
So why do people ride roller coasters again and again? Roller coaster
riders say that they are looking for the perfect ride: the biggest,
the fastest and the most frightening!

Read the story and answer the questions:
The Rich Man and the Shoemaker
Once upon a time, a shoemaker lived in a small house in a town. Nearby lived
a rich man. He was the richest man in town and his house was the biggest
house in town.
The shoemaker was a very happy person. He was much happier than the rich
man, and he loved to sing. Every day, he sang the most beautiful songs while
he did his hard work.
The rich man didn’t sleep at night. He stayed awake counting his gold coins.
He would speak to his coins and say, “You are the shiniest coin I have ever
seen. No, you are the shiniest coin I have ever seen.”
The rich man tried to sleep in the day because he didn’t sleep at night. When
he tried to sleep in the day, he couldn’t because he heard the shoemaker
singing.
With each passing day, the rich man became sleepier and sleepier and more
and more unhappy. All he could think about was stopping the shoemaker’s
singing.
The rich man asked himself, "What can I do to make the shoemaker stop
singing?" The rich man thought for a long time and thought of the most
clever plan.
That day, the rich man asked the shoemaker to come to his house and gave
him a bag full of shiny gold coins. “Take these as a gift, and you will be richer
than you ever imagined.”
The shoemaker was surprised, but took the gold coins and hid them under
his bed. He could not stop thinking about somebody stealing his gold coins.
He became sadder and sadder and more and more worried. He was so sad
and worried that he stopped singing and never sang again! Now the rich
man is happy and can sleep during the day.
