Scene Analysis This passage from the play Medea, written by Euripides 431 BCE is a soliloquy of the protagonist Medea in which she showcases her intentions and motivations. Medea was the wife of Jason, a hero from Iolcus, as he betrayed her with Glauce. In her soliloquy Medea contemplates her revenge against Jason containing a mixture of rational planning and emotional outburst which portrays her internal conflicts and the psychological depth of the problem Medea has. The opening sentence of the soliloquy is that Medea has a bad predicament as Medea is in a difficult situation which isn't possible to get out of but she doesn’t resign herself, she will take revenge. Medea uses the word “trails” in which she foreshadows that she will test the bond between the new official pair. Medea is a clever person that has a scheming nature. Medea states that she wouldn’t have flattered for Jason if she didn’t want to fulfill her purpose. As she states "carry out my schemes" show that she has a plan and isn't simply taking revenge. Medea uses a rhetorical question (l.5-6) which indicates that she isn’t asking for permission, approval or any sympathy, she is clear and confident in her abilities. Medea feels a severe disrespect for her husband which is being emphasized in line 7 to 9 of this passage. She points out that Jason could have hindered her plans by directly banishing her, but he gives her one more day. Medea’s anger and contempt is felt in the phrase “oh, what a fool!” (L.7) in which she outbursts emotionally. The evil plans of Medea showcase her character, she wants to kill all of her enemies: her father, daughter and husband "I have in mind so many paths of death for them" (l.12) displays her sinister imagination and planning. The violent planning like “set[ting] fire to the house” (l. 13) and “drive a sharp knife through their guts” (l.15) Creates a horrifying effect especially as she uses rhetorical questions which underline her deep hatred against her husband. Medeas malevouse character side is far from being fully explored. She weighs the pros and cons of different methods of murder and concludes that if she kills by her direct action she might be killed “and the last laugh goes to my enemies.” (L.17) so she decides on using what she knows best, poison. Showing her expertise in killing and planning a murder. Medeas determination to carry out her plan even if it means to sacrifice her own life showcases her character and the deep damage done to her. The imagery of who will help her fulfilling her plan is described as "If some strong tower of help appears" (l.23) shows that Medea wishes for assistance but she will carry out the plan on her own if she has to. Medeas belief in her power and her dedication to the goddess of witchcraft “Queen Hecate, whom above all divinities I venerate" is shown in this allusion as she references the goddess of witchcraft to show her powerful and cunning person. This is a foreshadowing as her reference to Hect at the dark things she is willing to unleash to fulfill her plan. This allusion to Hecate summarizes the menace and showcases the intrigues and malvenouse character of Medea. In conclusion, this soliloquy of Medea in the play Medea by Euripides showcases her motivations, internal conflicts. The mixture of emotional outbursts and rational planning creates a cold effect which highlights the malevolence of Medea. The use of rhetorical devices like imagery, allusion and rhetorical questions conveys Medeas intentions and her somewhat evil character. Overall this soliloquy showcases to complexity and depth of Medea and her revenge on Jason.
