PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL Presented by Golam Fahim Lecturer, MPE Department PRODUCTION PLANNING The planning of Industrial operations involves, what work shall be done, How the work shall be done and when the work shall be done. Objectives: 1. To determine the requirement of resources. 2. To make efforts to achieve production targets in time. 3. To arrange various input at right time and in right quantity. 4.To arrange production schedules according to market needs. 5. To achieve coordination among various departments relating to production. 2 PRODUCTION CONTROL Production Control refers to ensuring that all which occurs in accordance with the rules established and instructions issued. Objectives: 1. To reduce waiting time. 2. To minimize the wastage. 3. To regulate inventory management. 4.To introduce a proper system of quality control. 3 OBJECTIVES OF PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL 1.Optimize resources and the scheduling of resources to meet production demand 2.Ensure an efficient schedule 3.Have resources ready when needed 4.Keep inventory at optimal levels 5.Increase productivity of internal resources (human, work centers, machines, tooling, etc.) 6.Improve customer satisfaction 7.Ensure the right person gets assigned to specific processes 8.Coordinate with other departments (sales, customer service, purchasing, etc.) 4 FUNCTIONS OF PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL 1. Materials Function: Raw materials, Finished parts and Bought out components should be made available in required quantities and at required time 2. Machines and Equipment: include the analysis of facilities and making their availability with minimum down time because of breakdowns. 5 FUNCTIONS OF PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL 3. Methods: analysis of alternatives and selection of the best method with due consideration to constraints imposed. 4. Process Planning (Routing): (a) Fixation of path of travel giving due consideration to layout. (b) Breaking of operations to define each operation in detail. (c) Deciding the set up time and process time for each operation. 6 FUNCTIONS OF PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL 5. Estimating: After the process sheet for operations is made available, operation times are then estimated. The function is then carried out using analysis on areas of operations such as routing, raw materials and various other areas. 7 FUNCTIONS OF PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL 6. Loading and Scheduling: (a) Loading the machines as per their capability and capacity. (b) Determining the start and completion times for each operation. (c) To Co-ordinate with sales department regarding delivery schedules. 8 FUNCTIONS OF PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL 7. Dispatching: (a) To assign definite work to definite machines, work centres and men. (b) To issue required materials from stores. (c) To issue jigs, fixtures and make them available at correct point of use. (d) Release necessary work orders, time tickets etc. to authorise timely start of operations. 9 FUNCTIONS OF PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL 8. Expediting 1. Identification of bottlenecks and delays and interruptions because of which the production schedule may be disrupted. 2. To devise action plans (remedies) for correct the errors. 3 To see that production rate is in line with schedule. 10 FUNCTIONS OF PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL 9. Inspection: This forms the basis for knowing the limitations with respects to methods, processes etc. which is very much useful for evaluation phase. 10. Evaluation: A thorough analysis of all the factors influencing the production planning and control helps to identify the weak spots and the corrective action with respect to preplanning and planning will be effected by a feed back. 11 FUNCTIONS OF PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL 12 OBJECTIVES OF PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL 1.
