Dr. Rodolfo Soldevilla Cornejo
RS
- Was born on May 15,1909 in Singalong, Manila
- With his mother support, he started formal music lessons at
age of 6
- He was invited as organist of the Pasay Catholic Church
- His first composition at 10 was a piano piece named
“Glissando Waltz”.
- At age 14, he already had 26 compositions.
- He graduated with Teacher’s Diploma in Pianoforte and a
Teacher’s Diploma in Science Composition at UP
Conservatory of Music in 1930.

- He was conferred a Doctor of Music degree homoris causa in
1954.
- He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Neotarian
College of Philosophy in 1947
- He taught at the UP Conservatory of Music and became the
researcher and official composer of Philippine government-inexile
- He served as a pianist-director of a USO concert unit
- He was the soloist of the Manila Symphony Orchestra,
Filipinas Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the UP Symphony
Orchestra.

- He became director of the Cosmopolitan Colleges
Conservatory of Music from 1948-1949.
- He was a founding member of the League of Filipino
Composers, and is listed in “The International Who’s Who in
Music”.
- Cornejo was also known for his extemporaneous thematic
improvisations.
- He passed away on August 11, 1991.

Born on May 1, 1912 in Penaranda, Nueva Ecija
His parents were Juan de Leon and Natalia Padilla
He married pianist Iluminda Mendoza whom he had 6 children
His son Bayani is a well-known composer and Felipe Jr. is a
writer and present chairman of NCCA.
- His talent in painting and drawing was discovered during his
school days
- He took Fine Arts at the UP in 1927
- He played trombone in dance orchestras which performed in
cabarets, circuses, and bodabil.

National Artists Col. Antonio Buenaventura and Antonio Molina
- He graduated with a Music Teacher Diploma in 1939.
- He took advance studies in composition under Vittorio Giannini
- He was known as National Artist composer who expressed the
Philippines’ cultural identity
- His 2 operas, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo are
considered his masterpieces
- He wrote the popular Christmas carols Payapang Daigdig,
Noche Buena and Pasko Na Naman
- He died in Dec. 5, 1992 and received a posthumous award as
National Artist for Music in 1997.
