Lower Income Family Higher Income Family Source: Family Expenditure 2018, Philippine Statistics Authority In Grade 7, you studied the different kinds of graphs which gave vivid pictures of information that is not easy to grasp if written in paragraphs. A pie chart is a pizza-like kind of graph that shows information in slices. The slices of the graph correspond to categories or parts. The whole “pie” represents 100 percent of the entire pie, while the pie “slices” represent portions of the whole. Tell whether the statement is True or False based on the information given in the pie graph. If the statement is true write SAVE and if false, write BUY. Write your answers on your answer sheet. 1. It is relative that the income of Lower Income Family goes to food expenses than the highest income family. 2. House rental is the second highest expense for both families. 3. Water, electricity, gas, and other fuels were the smallest expense of each family according to the diagram. 4. We can assume a higher number of family members in the Lower Income Family than the Higher Income Family because of the highest percentage of food expenditures. 5. We can infer that the Higher Income Family has more savings and spend more leisure time than that of the Lower Income Family. BRIEF INTRODUCTION Any expository text will be easily understood if we convert the information in it into charts or graphs such as pie chart, bar graph, line graph, and pictograph. This will help us visualize the statistics involved and comprehend what the text is trying to discuss. ACTIVITY DIRECTIONS: Read the following and make your own pie chart based on the presented information in the text. Use the categories below. “The Common Filipino Family Income” I remember when I was in high school my parents were both working. My dad, a welder, earned an average wage of PHP3,000 per week. My mom, a sewer was earning an average of PHP2,100 per week. We had a fridge with some meats and processed food. My mom went to the grocery store every week and spent about PHP1,200. We paid a monthly house rental of PHP2,500. I still recall that we had our landline phone for PHP800 per month. Four of us were studying and my mom gave us our weekly allowances, 150 pesos for me and 100 pesos each for my younger siblings. Mom paid 210 pesos to the school service bus weekly for my 3 siblings. PRETEST DIRECTIONS: Analyze and write on the answer sheet the differences and similarities discussed in the text below. Chemical and Physical Changes All matter, all things can be changed in two ways: chemically and physically. Both chemical and physical changes affect the state of matter. Physical changes are those that do not change the make-up or identity of the matter. For example, clay will bend or flatten if squeezed, but it will still be clay. Changing the shape of clay is a physical change and does not change the matter’s identity. Chemical changes turn the matter into a new kind of matter with different properties. For example, when paper is burnt, it becomes ash and will never be paper again. The difference between them is that physical changes are temporary or only last for a little while, and chemical changes are permanent, which means they last forever. Physical and chemical changes both affect the state of matter. 1. Title of the passage: 2. What are being compared & contrasted? Ways Similar Ways Different 3. 6. 4. 7. 5. 8. LOOKING BACK In previous lessons, you have learned about signal words/phrases. These are transitional words and phrases that signal the reader about the writer’s shift to a different time or place or the setting up, developing, challenging, or summarizing of a set of ideas. Fact signal words include numbers, dates, and statistics, while opinion signal words include words such as "prefer," "think," "feel," "should," and "best." Transitions or signal words help you, the reader, to follow the direction of a writer’s thought. They are like signposts on the road that guide the traveler. BRIEF INTRODUCTION Challenge accepted for other ideas! Comparing is showing the similarities, and contrasting is showing differences between two things that are related in some way. For example, you would not compare/contrast reading a book to driving a car, but you would compare reading a printed copy of a book to reading with an e-reader. Find out the connection of these two important words COMPARE AND CONTRAST through TEXTS. Even if two texts are written about the same topic, they can have different information depending on the author's perspective or the source/basis of the information. When you compare two texts on the same topic, you get more information than you would if you read just one. What is multi-modal? Multi-modal refers to the integration of different modes of text to create meaning and to convey messages. A text may be defined as multimodal when it combines two or more semiotic (relating to signs and symbols) systems. There are five semiotic (relating to signs and symbols) systems in total: 1. Linguistic: comprising aspects such as vocabulary, generic structure, and the grammar of oral and written language 2. Visual: comprising aspects such as color, vectors, and viewpoint in still and moving images. 3. Audio: comprising aspects such as volume, pitch, and rhythm of music and sound effects 4. Gestural: comprising aspects such as movement, speed, and stillness in facial expression and body language. 5. Spatial: comprising aspects such as proximity, direction, and position of layout and organization of objects in space. Multimodal texts can be delivered via different media or technologies. They may be presented on paper or be digital. Some examples include: Website, animations, picture book, game design, podcast, poster cover design, online presentation, eBooks, digital storytelling, comics, video and audio. Comparing/Contrasting Compare Signal Words similarly Authors often use signal words like when comparing characters, both setting and events within their also / too writing. as well as Contrast while / whereas unlike in contrast but different ACTIVITY The Spiral 4X has a 5 inch touch screen. What is the difference between comparing and contrasting? 2. What is the importance of multimodal texts in comparing and contrasting of the same topic? POSTTEST Compare & Contrast Nonfiction Texts THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD DIRECTIONS: Read the two texts below. Then, use the Venn diagram to compare/contrast details from the two passages. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper. TEXT 1 tarting in the early 1800s, the Underground Railroad was a secret organization of routes and safe places used by slaves to escape to freedom. Slaves left the southern states, where slavery was legal, and went to the northern states and Canada, where they could be free. Along the way, people who were against slavery, called abolitionists, would hide the slaves until they could move to the next stop along the route. Reverend John Rankin, one of many abolitionists involved in the movement, hid over 2,000 escaping slaves in his home in Ohio. Using the Underground Railroad was dangerous. If slaves were caught escaping, they were subjected to extreme, violent punishments. Slaveholders and law enforcement used packs of dogs, called bloodhounds, to track down escaped slaves. The Underground Railroad ended when slavery was abolished during the Civil War. At least 30,000 people used the secret system to make their way to freedom. TEXT 2 he Underground Railroad was a movement that was organized by former slaves and people who opposed slavery. Though it was a dangerous journey, it allowed thousands of slaves to find a path to free states in the north. Slaves were led by people who knew the route, called conductors, and traveled mostly during the night. Harriet Tubman, a former slave and one of the most famous conductors, led 13 groups of slaves to freedom. As more and more slaves escaped to the north, slaveholders grew angry and asked the government to put a stop to the Underground Railroad. They believed that slaves were their property and that escaped slaves were “stolen” from them. As the number of escaped slaves grew, the United States government passed a law called the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. The law required law-enforcement officials to capture and return slaves to their owners, even if they were found in a free state. People who were caught helping slaves were subjected to harsh punishments. copyright © Compare & Contrast Nonfiction Texts THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD BOTH TEXT 1 1. 2. 3. 4. When students compare/contrast, they make meaningful connections within and beyond the text. 2. When discussing literature, the term compare means to show the similarities between two or more things. On the other hand, contrast means to show the differences between two or more things. 3. In drawing similarities and differences of texts, students must recognize the elements of the stories such as the setting, characters, plot, and the theme. 4. Compare and contrast improves comprehension. 5. Theme and main ideas are two similar things. LOOKING BACK TO YOUR LESSON DIRECTIONS: Study the sentences and on your answer sheet identify the two things or persons being compared or contrasted in each. 1. Contact lenses and eyeglasses are both used to correct vision, but they still have major differences in terms of convenience. 2. My sisters, Nestita and Myra are twins, but they differ considerably in appearance and lifestyle. 3. Clementines and tangerines both belong to the mandarin class of oranges but differ significantly in sizes. 4. Democracy and oligarchy are both forms of government by power source “ruled by people or a few”. However, there are differences in terms of electing their officials. 5. President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo both delivered relatively short inaugural speeches when sworn into office with similar focal point: the people. However, they differ considerably in the number of invited and non-invited guests. BRIEF INTRODUCTION As you go through Lesson 1, you will learn to compare/contrast different stories that are either of the same genre and written by a single author or totally unrelated to each other. While this practice might seem hard at first and requires a lot of work on your part, it can get interesting if you know some tricks to do it the right way. Compare, in relation to reading, refers to the process of identifying the similarities and differences between two things. On the other hand, Contrast refers to identifying only the differences between two things. The distinction between these two terms may be quite subtle. Here are some suggested steps to draw similarities and differences between two or more reading texts: 1. Compare the Plots Start the comparison with a discussion of each story’s plot and how are they different from or same with one another: the plot’s structure and the pace of the progression, exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and dénouement of both the stories? 2. Compare the Characters Compare the main characters of one story with the corresponding main characters of another story: their flaws and perfections, language and dialogue delivery, social standing, and emotional intellect. Compare whether the characters are flat or round and what influences them the most in the story. 3. Compare the Narrative and Writing Style Differentiate between the stories based on their narrative style i.e., whether they are written in first person narration, multiple narrations, omniscient narration or any other and writing style and tone. 4. Compare the Themes Compare the themes of both the stories and their main ideas; the moral lessons the stories are trying to convey and how they differ from one another. The main idea is what the book is mostly about or the “big” idea of the story. The theme is the message, lesson, or moral of a book. A theme is the point or central idea of a literary work. It may be stated in terms of a point of view (e.g., unchecked ambition is dangerous to all) or as a single word (e.g., love, death). Common Literary Themes: • • • • • • • • Acceptance Courage Perseverance Cooperation Compassion Honesty Kindness Loyalty ACTIVITY 1 DIRECTIONS: Read and understand the sentences. On your answer sheet, write COMP if the statement indicates comparison and CONT if it indicates contrast. 1. The Japanese story The Fox and the Bear and the Chinese tale The Trial of the Stone both dealt with the consequences of deceiving or cheating others. Both the stories taught the readers that people have no right to deceive or cheat others because time will come that the one you cheated will cheat on you too. 2. May Day Eve and How my Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife were both written by Filipino writers Nicomedes Marquez Joaquin and Manuel E. Arguilla respectively. 3. May Day Eve tells the readers not to believe others unless there is proof while How my Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife conveys to the readers that love conquers all, no matter how big the differences would be between the two lovers. 4. The Butterfly Lovers is a Chinese legend of a tragic love story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai while the Japanese folktale The Sad Story of the Yaoya's Daughter is about forbidden love with a priest boy and also has a tragic ending. 5. The Bird with Two Necks and The Blue Jackal are both Indian tales. ACTIVITY 2 DIRECTIONS: Read and understand The Two Brothers, an Egyptian Folktale. Compare and contrast the two brothers in the story using a Venn diagram. Use a separate paper for your answer. The Two Brothers Once there were two brothers. Anpu was the elder, and Bata was the younger. When their parents died, Anpu was already married and had a house of his own, so he took his little brother with him and treated him like his son. When the little brother grew to be a young man, he became an excellent worker. He did the plowing. He harvested the corn, and there was no one his equal in the whole land. Behold, the spirit of the god was within him. Every morning, the younger brother followed his oxen and worked all day in the fields, and every evening, he returned to the house with vegetables, milk, and wood. He laid all these before his elder brother, and he took with him his bread, and he drove the cattle into the field. Because Anpu loved his younger brother very much, his wife became very jealous and she wanted to destroy Bata. One day, when Anpu and Bata were in the fields, they needed some corn, so Anpu sent Bata home to get some. The younger brother found the wife combing her hair and said to her, “Get up and give me some corn that I may run to the field for my elder brother is in a hurry. Do not delay.” At eventide, Anpu returned home earlier than his brother because Bata had much work to do in the fields. Anpu was met by his wife, who was crying bitterly. She showed him her arms and legs which he had painted black and blue and accused Bata of having beaten her up. She pretended to be in great pain. She did not give him water to wash his hands with. She did not light the fire for him. She pretended that she was very sick. Anpu became very angry. He sharpened his knife and waited for Bata in the stable. When the sun went down, Bata came home as usual, loaded with herbs, milk, and wood. As he entered the door, he saw the feet of his brother and the sharp knife hanging by his side. The brother sprang from him and Bata fled praying to the god Ra. “My good Lord! Save me from death, thou who divines the evil from the good.” Ra heard his cry. He made a river flow between one brother and the other and filled it with crocodiles. Bata asked his elder brother, “Why do you seek to kill me? Am I not your brother and have you not always treated me as if you were my father? Has not your wife been as mother to me? Now since you want to kill me, I shall go to the Valley of the Acacia.” Anpu answered, “Why did you beat up my wife and almost kill her.” Bata answered, “I did not do such thing. Have I told you that I have always looked upon her as my mother?” So, Anpu went home. He found his wife near the river washing off the black and blue dye with which she had painted herself. Filled with great anger, Anpu killed his wife and cast her to the dogs. Then, he sat down, poured ashes on his head, and mourned for his younger brother. Bata reached the Valley of Acacia. Since there was no one with him, he slew wild beasts for food, built himself a house and met the Nine Gods who knew of his innocence and goodness. Ra said to the God Khunumu. Behold frame a woman for Bata, that he may not remain alone. So Khunumu made for Bata a wife to dwell with him. She was indeed more beautiful than any other in the whole land. She was like a goddess and Bata loved her very much. CHECKING YOUR UNDERSTANDING DIRECTIONS: Read the selections below then compare the elements presented in the two texts. Enter your findings in the Compare and Contrast Chart. Copy the chart then answer in a separate paper. MOMOTARO (Japanese Folktale) Momotaro is one of the most loved folktales in Japan as well as one of the most well-known. The name "Momotaro" literally means "Peach Taro," which is a name suffix often seen in Japan. You may have heard the story translated as "Peach Boy." According to the present form of the tale (dating to the Edo period), Momotarō came to Earth inside a giant peach, which was found floating down a river by an old, childless woman who was washing clothes there. The woman and her husband discovered the child when they tried to open the peach to eat it. The child explained that he had been sent by Heaven to be their son. The couple named him Momotarō, from momo (peach) and tarō (eldest son in the family). Years later, Momotarō left his parents to fight a band of marauding oni (demons or ogres) on a distant island. En route, Momotarō met and befriended a talking dog, monkey, and pheasant, who agreed to help him in his quest. At the island, Momotarō and his animal friends penetrated the demons' fort and beat the band of demons into surrendering. Momotarō and his new friends returned home with the demons' plundered treasure and the demon chief as a captive. Momotarō and his family lived comfortably from then on. BAWANG MERAH BAWANG PUTIH (Indonesian Folktale) Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih are half-sisters who are polar opposites of each other. Bawang Merah is a lazy, greedy girl spoiled by their mother while Bawang Putih is obedient, diligent and does all the chores without complaint. One laundry day in the river, Bawang Putih loses a scarf, which is picked up by an old woman. The old woman says she will return the scarf if Bawang Putih cooks and cleans for her. Bawang Putih does as she is told, gets the scarf back and the old woman as a gift tells her to bring home one of her two pumpkins, a small or a large one. Bawang Putih chooses the smaller pumpkin. When she breaks open the pumpkin at home, she discovers the fruit is filled with jewelry. Bawang Merah and their mother get jealous and want their own pumpkin filled with jewelry, so they go to the river and deliberately lose their scarves. Then they visit the old woman’s house and ask for a pumpkin. They bring home the big one (of course), but instead of jewelry, their large pumpkin is filled with snakes. COVID-19 is spreading rapidly that most people only experience mild or moderate symptoms. BRIEF INTRODUCTION In Lesson 1, you learned the meanings of fact and opinion and their key differences. Facts and opinions have a huge difference in their meanings. Whether a statement is a fact, or an opinion depends on the validity of the statement. A fact refers to something true or real, an event or information based on real occurrences that can be measured, observed, and proved, which is supported by proofs, statistics, documentation evidence, documentation, research and study. Moreover, a fact can be tested through verifiability. An opinion is what a person believes or thinks about something. It is defined as the personal view or judgment about a subject that may or may not be substantiated by facts or positive knowledge. It is highly influenced by a person’s feelings, thoughts, perspective, desires, attitude, experiences, understanding, and beliefs. In other words, an opinion is an inconclusive statement, used in subjective matters, which cannot be proved true or false. It is what a person thinks or feels about something or someone’s values, etc., which cannot be tested by concrete evidence. Therefore, due to individual differences, every person’s opinion on a particular matter may also be different. In finer terms, a fact is a proven truth, whereas opinion is a personal view that represents the outlook of an individual, which may or may not be based on the fact. Key Differences between Fact and Opinion: 1. A fact is described as the statement that can be verified or proved to be true. Opinion is an expression of judgement or belief about something. 2. Fact relies on observation or research while opinion is based on assumption 3. Fact is an objective reality whereas opinion is a subjective statement. 4. Facts can be verified with the help of evidence or statistics. On the contrary, opinion is not supported by any evidence. 5. Facts explain what happened. Unlike an opinion that represents a perception about something. 6. One important feature of fact is that it is universal and does not differ from person to person. As against this, every human being has a different opinion on a particular subject and so, it varies from one person to another. 7. Facts are shown with unbiased words; however, opinion is expressed with biased words. 8. Facts can change anybody’s opinion, but vice versa is not possible. 9. Facts are real information and so it cannot be challenged or debated, but if we talk about opinions, they can be debated. ACTIVITY 1 DIRECTIONS: Read and study the sentences below.
