This course will help the students to learn, acquaint and to become familiar to laboratory equipments, chemicals and laboratory ethics and safety regulations. Course Description Unit 1: Introduction Objectives and activities in laboratory. Prerequisites for establishing a laboratory. Components and requirements for laboratory: Selection, availability, costing, usage and audit. Challenges associated: Global vs India. Unit 2: Management Understanding management Issues, Ensuring management of budget/funds, infrastructure, space design, permissions, students, timings, advertisements etc. Managing specific facilities/rooms/space. Evaluation of laboratory. Parameters for the performance assessment of laboratory. Stock maintenance, tracking and updation. Quality and lab maintenance: challenges associated and their regulations. Unit 3: Safety and Hazards Role of instructor for laboratory and staff protection. Common hazards in laboratory. Safety management in laboratory: with reference to general hazard, fire, chemicals, and biological agents dead or alive. Personal protective equipment and preventive measures. Waste management in laboratories: Selection, segregation, management and disposal. Course Outcomes: Upon completing the course, student would be able: CO1. Understanding the responsibilities of managing a biological laboratory. CO2. Students will understand the integrities of establishing a new laboratory. CO3. Enabling students to upgrade and improve the established laboratory. CO4. Understanding the management issues related to a functional laboratory.
