Kristian Diaz BSEMC-GAD 201GA Changes in Physical and Sexual Self 1.What are common secondary sexual male and female characteristics and how do changes occur? Use the table in the next slide to fill it up. Common Male and Female Secondary Sexual Characteristics More pronounced body hair (beard, chest, etc.) (Male) Deeper Voice (Male) Heavier musculature (Male) Less pronounced body hair (pubic region, hair in body is finer) (Female) More pronounced breasts that contains more fatty tissue (Female) Higher Voice (Female) How do changes occur? The testosterone in males encourages the growth of these body hairs. The hair for men is usually more present and thicker and occurs around puberty 12-18. These change of voice occur during puberty and can happen between ages of 10-15. During puberty, there’s a surge of sex hormones that causes the vocal to build up muscle which is also the cause of testosterone present in males. Most occurs during 16, but males still develop in other ways well in their 20’s. Males usually achieve these peak muscle mass between ages of 20-30. Because the testosterone is present in males, this makes us gain more muscle hypertrophy than females. The changes in hair for females occur around 12. They begin to see hair growth under their arms. The pubic hair grows along the labia and will gradually become thicker and finer, but the overall hair growth is lesser than males. For females, their breasts grow in response to the hormones estrogen and progesterone that is present in their body. As they enter puberty, the levels of these hormones increases and the stimulation of these makes their breasts grow. As the female body goes through puberty, their larynx grows larger and thicker (because of estrogen) but for females, it only deepens by a couple of tones so their voices are much higher than males. I first notice the growth of my body hair, then my voice got deeper and deeper as I enter highschool. Then in my senior high days, I developed more refined muscles which makes it easier for me to carry heavy things. Nothing big or serious because I already knew that these changes will occur to me eventually. 3.How does the society influence the sexual behavior of an individual? - Society can shape what is viewed as normal for sexual conduct for males and females by having a collective thought of what is viewed as acceptable and unacceptable. One example is how we date and how long do we have to wait to have sex. How do we attract the opposite sex. The idea of sex is mostly unspokenly decided by the society, but not all is influenced by the society. Some people are influenced by their religion, family, peers and even their own ideas. 4.Can we really change our natural or innate sexual organ and sexual response? - Technically, we can with the help of modern technology but, it’s not natural anymore. They have to experience the proper medical procedure to physically change their gender. As for the sexual response, it depends because as we grow there is a possible change in our brain (or experience) that can trigger a switch in one’s sexual preference.
