Task #1: Yes, No, What Say You?
Instructions:
For each scenario below, please compose a response that evaluates the argumentative nature of
the topic.
1. Books that are controversial should be banned.

Is the topic or issue universally disputable/disagreed upon? (A single word “yes” or
“no” will suffice.)

How do you know that the topic or issue is or is not universally disputable/disagreed
upon? (In 5 sentences, justify your “yes” or “no” answer.)
2. All textbooks should be digitized for environmental purposes so that trees are preserved
by no longer publishing printed textbooks. (In other words, textbooks are only available
digitally.)

Is the topic or issue universally disputable/disagreed upon? (A single word “yes” or
“no” will suffice.)

How do you know that the topic or issue is or is not universally disputable/disagreed

3. Currently, South Alabama is on a standard scheduling system of courses on a
Monday/Wednesday/Friday period or Tuesday/Thursday period. MWF courses are 50
minutes, whereas TR courses are 75 minutes. For hypothetical purposes, let’s say that
South Alabama has decided to move all courses to a
Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday schedule, meaning that all classes are now 75
minutes on either MW or TR. There are no longer 50 minute classes, but just as
importantly, there are no longer classes on Friday.

Is the topic of moving all courses to a 75 minute, MW or TR schedule universally
disputable/disagreed upon? (A single word “yes” or “no” will suffice.)

How do you know that the topic or issue is or is not universally disputable/disagreed
upon? (In 5 sentences, justify your “yes” or “no” answer.)
