Genesis 4: Cain and Abel Adam and Eve established a family They had two sons: Cain is a tiller of the ground, Farmer Abel is a keeper of flocks, Shepherd Man recognized God’s Blessings Humans offers their thanksgiving to God by burning their offerings on the altar Holocaust – burnt-offering Cain offered fruit of the ground (crops/harvest) Abel offered firstling of his flock (lamb) The offering of Abel was pleasing to God The offering of Cain, God had no regard Why are the possible reasons why Cain’s offering rejected? -not the best -intention not genuine – for compliance - attitude not sincere – not given wholeheartedly Effects on Cain Jealous/Envious Anger and Hatred evil – bad action The first crime committed Cain killed his brother (murder) Fratricide (layman’s term, killing one’s sibling) “Am I my brother’s keeper” Genesis 4:9 Negative Consequences of Cain’s Action - God cursed the ground, what it will no longer bear fruit - Cain will become a fugitive, a wanderer. Cain Bargained with God “My punishment is more than I could bear!” God show mercy and love to Cain -whoever kills Cain will suffer sevenfold vengeance (*sevenfold = 7x7) -God gave mark on Cain so that no one may kill him. - God did not abandoned Cain Cain’s descendants stayed away from the land. They became keeper of livestock, musicians, iron smith. (Genesis 4:20-22) Genesis 6-9: The Great Flood “The wickedness of man was great in the earth and the imagination of his heart was evil continually” God decided to blot out man from the face of the earth. (Genesis 6:5-7) Noah find favor in the eyes of the Lord and together with his family they became a fresh start, a new beginning for mankind. Sin and its effects The fall of Adam and Eve had a wave effect cascading on the whole of creation.
