formal tone and style, but it is not complex and does not required the use of long sentences and
complicated vocabulary.
Academic writing is different from a creative essay, a business letter, and a legal document in terms of

What is academic writing?



Academic writing is writing you do in a specific field of study or in school
It has a thesis statement and the rest of your writing is about proving is demonstrating a thesis
It includes evidence like for example facts, quotes, paraphrases, and summaries from sources



There are 3 main parts to most academic writing projects:
Introduction – includes background information and a thesis statement
Body – has all the main ideas and evidence that support your thesis statement.
Conclusion – summarizes what was proven and shows its significance of it.


Most academic writing uses the third person POV (she, he him, they, and them). This approach
is meant to make academic writing sound objective
