Can the student explain what estar is used to express? Evidence Outcomes: (Learning Targets) I can: Use estar to express a feeling/condition of myself, another person, and an object. This means: I can properly conjugate the verb, estar, and match the ending with the subject. I can understand and properly use the appropriate vocabulary words for feelings/conditions. List of Assessments: (Write the number of the learning target associated with each assessment) For the last activity, the students will do a puzzle and match the vocabulary words with their meanings in English as an informal assessment/practice session. Colorado State University College of Applied Human Sciences Page 1 STEPP Lesson Plan Form Planned Lesson Activities Name and Purpose of Lesson Estar with Conditions & Feelings The purpose of this lesson is to teach how one can use the verb, estar, to express conditions and feelings as well as to introduce some vocabulary of conditions/feelings. Approx. Time and Materials 25-30 minutes Whiteboard, puzzle packets for each student, note organizer for the vocabulary words (for each student) Anticipatory Set 5 min Procedures Closure Differentiation - Explanation of the verb, estar, and what it is used for: to express feelings and conditions - Review of how to conjugate estar 5 minutes- explanation of estar used for conditions/feelings & conjugation review 10-15 minutes- Introduction of each vocabulary word Ask if students know/have an idea of what the word is Have a student come up and draw a visual representation of the term The students all write in the vocab word, the English equivalent, and a visual representation in one of the boxes on their note organizer 10 minutes- Students work on and complete vocabulary word puzzle Check to see if students completed the puzzle correctly The closure of this lesson will be to check the students’ puzzles and ask if they have any questions or if they don’t completely understand any of the vocabulary words. To check for understanding, I will ask several of the students, in Spanish, how they are or to make a statement about an object or another person using estar and one of the vocabulary words. To modify, I will go around and help while the students are working on their puzzles. I will ask if they have any questions or are having a hard time with anything and will explain further. To extend, while the students work on the puzzle, I will go around and ask those who finish first or are having no problem with the puzzle to tell me, in Spanish, how they are Colorado State University College of Applied Human Sciences Page 2 STEPP Lesson Plan Form and to describe various people and objects in the classroom using estar and the conditions/feelings vocabulary terms. Assessment I will know by their participation when we go over the vocabulary words and by how well they are able to complete the puzzle and use estar with the vocabulary words orally when asked. Colorado State University College of Applied Human Sciences Page 3 STEPP Lesson Plan Form Post Lesson Reflection 1. To what extent were lesson objectives achieved? (Utilize assessment data to justify your level of achievement) I certainly covered the vocabulary very well and provided the students with a good resource to study with. So the students got a very good understanding of the new vocabulary words, but they were not able to practice using estar with them orally or with the puzzle because of time constraints. 2. What changes, omissions, or additions to the lesson would you make if you were to teach again? I would break down the vocabulary into two separate lessons: one for conditions and one for feelings. Going through all of the vocabulary words ended up taking the entire class period to finish, with no time left to do the puzzle or practice them. I would come up with a different activity for each of the two sets and then later have the students do the puzzle to go over both sets before a quiz. 3. What do you envision for the next lesson? (Continued practice, reteach content, etc.) Next time, I would have the students tell me how they are in Spanish, using estar with a condition/feeling vocabulary word. I would have them do/finish their puzzle and work with each other by asking how each other are and by describing people and objects in the classroom using estar and the vocabulary. They would have a quiz at the end of class on the vocabulary words and the conjugations of estar in the present tense. Colorado State University College of Applied Human Sciences Page 4
