4.1 Introduction
4.1.1 Depressurization Escape Routes

Certain destinations will have routes that overfly mountainous
regions. When the GRID MORA is higher than FL100, then a standard
emergency descent may not be possible due to obstacle clearance. In
these cases the “Escape Route” will be published for the critical route
segments.

Loss of pressurization requires that the aircraft is flown at an altitude
that provides oxygen for crew and passengers. The aircraft has
systems in place that will provide oxygen to passengers and crew
while the aircraft is descending to this altitude.

When terrain clearance is not a factor the “normal” emergency
descent can be flown down to FL100. However, when terrain
clearance is a factor, the descent profile and route to be flown must
provide terrain clearance and comply with regulated oxygen
requirements.

In order for the systems to provide adequate protection, the aircraft
must be flown in accordance to (or below) the following profile after a
depressurization (refer to FCOM). This profile is applicable to the
B737-500/800 aircraft equipped with 12 minutes of passengers’
oxygen supply.

This profile by itself does not provide terrain clearance. For some of
AMC routes this profile could put the aircraft below MSA. Therefore
“Escape Routes” have been established for certain routes. Escape
Routes have an escape start point on the normal route, dependant on
the terrain. One company route may have multiple escape start points
and therefore multiple escape routes.

4.1.2 Assumptions
The following assumptions apply:
All obstacles located within 5 NM of either side of the route centerline

have been considered, based on a 10 NM corridor survey.

All obstacles are cleared by min 2000 ft.

Flight after depressurization is performed at MMO/VMO
(0.82/340kt).

Temperature is ISA, no wind.

In case of in-flight turn back, 1.5 minutes are lost for the turn and 3
nm radius of turn.
Emergency Descent in case of rapid depressurization procedure:
Start emergency descent to FL 180 with max flying time 11MINs from

the start of descent.
After 11MINs are over start descent to FL 140 with max flying time 30

MINs from level off
After 30 MINs at FL 140 descent to FL 100

