Understanding World War I
Lesson Plan for Grade 8, Social Studies

OBJECTIVES
1. Students will be able to summarize the causes, events, and consequences of
World War I.
MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Textbook or articles about World War I
2. Maps of Europe and the world
3. Images and videos related to World War I
4. Handouts with key terms and questions
Introduction (10 minutes):
Begin by asking students what they know about World War I.
Show a map of Europe and the world and ask students to identify the countries involved
in the war. Introduce the key terms and concepts that will be covered in the lesson.
Direct Instruction (30 minutes):
Use the textbook or articles to provide an overview of the causes of World War I.
Discuss the key events of the war and how they impacted different countries and
regions.
Show images and videos to help illustrate the events and conditions of the war.
Guided Practice (20 minutes):
Divide students into small groups and provide them with a map of Europe and the world.
Ask them to identify the countries involved in the war and how the war impacted each
country.

Give each group a set of questions related to the causes, events, and consequences of
World War I.
Independent Practice (20 minutes):
Provide students with handouts containing key terms and concepts related to World War
I.Ask them to write a short essay explaining the causes and consequences of the war.
Closure (10 minutes):
Have each student share their essay with the class.
Review key concepts and terms and discuss how World War I impacted the world.
