The Money Game - Print On Demand Starter Guide
What is Print On Demand (POD)?
-
Print on demand is a business model in which the seller does not need to have the physical
product that they are selling. Items are only printed(produced) when a customer makes an
order so there is no money sitting in stock waiting to be bought.
-
Most of the sites i will talk about will follow the POD business model, which is very beneficial
if you are looking to earn money passively. Why? Because these sites do not charge,
instead they allow you to create an account. Once you have an account you can upload your
own designs, and you are paid a margin of the products selling price, once a sale is made.
Sites to consider when starting up
Teepublic
- This is a platform for custom apparel and designs owned by Redbubble. This is one of the
main sites i have been using and that i recommend if you are not using it already. With the
link below you can create a free account today and get started. All sales made between the
first and last day of month are paid by the 15th of the following month (e.g. Sales made
between January 1st to January 31st are paid by the 15th of February), which is great as
you can watch your earnings increase, almost like your own little savings account.

Redbubble
- This is a global online marketplace for print-on-demand products based on user-submitted
artwork. Redbubble is a great site to use alongside teepublic, as you can transfer your
designs from teepublic to it, allowing you to have the same design on 2 different platforms.
One of the main benefits of using Red Bubble is that it allows you to control your margins, so
you are in charge of how much your designs are sold for and how much you can make from
them. All sales made between the 15th to the 14th of the next month are paid by the 16th
(e.g. all sales between the 15th of january and 14th of february are paid by the 16th of
february)
-
Once you create a Redbubble account i suggest you leave your margins at 20% and once
you hit your first 10 sales bump you sticker margins to either 80% or 100%. (you can do
this by going into product pricing)

How to find winning designs (basic guide)
Firstly this tool is your best friend:
https://redbubble.dabu.ro/redbubble-popular-tags
It will help you find what is trending and so you are not wasting your time on designs that
may not sell, i’ll explain how it works below:
When on the site you will see multiple lines with 4 number like this followed by a link;
1. The first number is the ranking, so where in the top 10,000 tags that certain tag is
ranked. [7761]
2. How many positions the tag has either ranked up or down by (if highlighted red
that means the tag has dropped in ranking) [279]
3. How many designs under a certain tag (This is very important as this shows how
many people you are competing against.) I recommend looking at tags with less than
600 designs. [470]
4. This is the amount of new designs that have been added to that tag. [7]
This is the most important section when it comes to making your sales. I would recommend
you scroll through the later pages e.g. page 109 and get design ideas from there. This way you
less competition, Also keep an eye out for tags that have ranked up. This site refreshes every
Monday.
Make sure to set your entries to 100 per page to save yourself some time when searching
In addition you can also use this tool: http://bubbletrends.herokuapp.com/trends
This will help you find the top 3 trending niches from A-Z (I call this the A-Z method)
All of the niches can be found by going on the redbubble search bar, but this tool allows you
to see everything on one page, instead going through every letter individually.
As you can see above the top trends are on a list on one page in comparison to that shown
below of have to search letter by letter on Redbubble (Even though is also an option)
If you do manage to find a design and you get even just one sale, make sure to create
colour variants of the same design as shown below;
How to create designs on any platform (PC, Laptop, Mobile Devices)
-
PC & Laptop use: https://pixlr.com/
Or https://www.photopea.com/
-
Mobile Devices: Over app on IOS & Android (Photopea also works on phones)
If you are new to designing I would advise you to start off with simple text designs, just to build
your portfolio, you will still get sales.
Make sure you set your Dimensions (the size of your design) correctly, I recommend for you to
use 12,000 pixels by 12,000 pixels. You can always scale down but this way you can make
sure that your design fits on everything from a sticker to bed duvets and tapestries.
How to tag and get your designs seen
To find relevant tags this tool is the go to:
https://automation.merchtitans.com/tools/redbubble-tag-generator
Make sure on Redbubble you use between 15-20 tags, and on Teepublic 1-10 tags, this is
what has worked for me the best.
Good luck, not that you will need it. If you use these methods for at least 1 hour a day by the
end of the month you’ll have yourself some sales. I’m going to leave you with some of my
sales highlights and payouts so you can see that it’s possible.
You can also use this tool:

here one customer bought 50 stickers, i know crazy right!
over 600 sales earning over £700 in one month on Redbubble.
Teepublic earning for January 2020.
