PanelView Plus: Firmware Upgrade Wizard (FUW) Utility
Firmware Upgrade Wizard (FUW)
The Firmware Upgrade Wizard (FUW) allows the PanelView Plus/ PanelView Plus CE terminals to be upgraded or
downgraded to whatever version of firmware is available from the .fup files.
The .fup files contain the version of FactoryTalk View Machine Edition that will be
installed on the terminal
The 3.00.05.65 and above .fup files contain an option that allows selected
KEPServer drivers to be installed onto the terminal as well
KEPServer drivers are not pre-installed on the pre-PanelView Plus 6 terminals and must be installed
via the Firmware Upgrade Wizard
Only install the required driver(s). Do NOT check all the drivers, as this can create issues
The 3.10 and above .fup files will also automatically update the OS of the terminal
PanelView Plus 6 and PanelView Plus 7 are NOT firmware compatible with earlier
versions of the firmware, this means:
A PanelView Plus 6 can only be updated with PanelView Plus 6 firmware
(firmware revisions 5.10.XX and older do not apply)
A PanelView Plus 7 can only be updated with PanelView Plus 7 firmware
A pre-PanelView Plus 6 cannot be updated with PanelView Plus 6 or PanelView
Plus 7 firmware (therefore it cannot run 6.0.XX or higher firmware)
If you are upgrading from 3.00 to 3.10 or greater, you will need to order a 2711P-RU310;
please contact your distributor to order, see below for details on the Media update kit.
For panels at firmware 4.00 or older, a default of the panel's RSLinx Enterprise
communications may be necessary to ensure that the Ethernet driver is present
Using the Firmware Upgrade Wizard (FUW)
1. Select the Firmware Upgrade Wizard either under the Tools menu in FactoryTalk
View Studio or through the Windows Start menu
2. Select the method of upgrade
Upgrade firmware on terminal uses RSLinx Enterprise/FactoryTalk Linx to
connect to the terminal
Create firmware upgrade card allows the user to put the upgrade files onto the
root of a USB flash drive or SD/CF card
3. If you choose Create firmware upgrade card, choose the type of terminal you'd like
to upgrade, then click Next; if not, go to Step 12
4. The source folder should be selected by default, but it is normally located at:
For 32-bit OS:
C:\Program Files\Rockwell Software\RSView Enterprise\FUPs\
For 64 bit OS:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockwell Software\RSView Enterprise\FUPs\
Choose the firmware upgrade version you require, and then click Next
If necessary, select the specific KEPServer driver(s) required; if you are not using
KEPServer then ensure that no drivers are selected and click Next to continue
5. Verify the data in the screen, and click Finish; a firmware upgrade card will be
created
6. Once finished, exit the Firmware Upgrade Wizard and properly eject the removable
storage device
7. To prepare the terminal, ensure all the needed .mer files have been backed up

8. Insert the upgrade card; you will get a message that tells you which firmware is in the
terminal and which is on the memory card
9. You will get Upgrade and Exit buttons; select Upgrade
The upgrade will take several minutes; be patient, because if you remove the
card before the update is complete you may corrupt the upgrade
10. Once the upgrade completes, you will either get a prompt that the upgrade
completed, or you will come back to the Configuration screen; remove the upgrade
media at this point
On terminals that are being upgraded from below firmware 8.1 to firmware 8.1 or
above - or on terminals that do not have desktop access security configured the prompts to set a password and challenge question will appear; it is safe to
remove the upgrade media at this point
For more information on this procedure, please consult BF22664 - PanelView
Plus 6/PanelView Plus 7: prompts for password change after upgrade of
firmware.
11. If you are not able to remove the .mer files or prepare the terminal, then power down
the terminal, insert the memory card, and reboot. When the display shows 2 Image
search while performing the boot tests, it should read the memory card, and install
the firmware
12. If you would like to upgrade via Ethernet, you will need to perform Step 2 above, and
then you would select Upgrade Firmware on Terminal --> Next
13. Select the Network Connection (Using RSLinx Enterprise/FactoryTalk Linx) radio
button and click Next (NEVER USE SERIAL)
14. Select the Terminal that you would like to update (do NOT drill down below the top (IP
Address) level), and select Next
15. The top of the window will indicate the current firmware (major.minor.patch.build) of
the terminal; select the firmware version you'd like the terminal to be upgraded to
from the drop down list and click Next
16. If necessary, select the specific KEPServer driver(s) required; If you are not using
KEPServer then ensure none of the drivers are selected and click Next to continue
17. Verify the information on the screen and click Finish to begin the upgrade
