BUSINESS TITLE A group of nurse decided to venture into a food business. Even with the evergrowing popularity of various kinds of business in the food industry, these nurses established a company named “Nurse-Entrepreneurs Company” with a purpose of providing a healthy yet tasty fast-food innovated products. Aside from gaining profit from this startup business, they also want to offer a solution for parents who are having a difficult time to feed their children with nutritious food. Nurse-Entrepreneurs Co. considered this factor to ease the struggle of parents by tricking the children into eating vegetables or fruits by using it as an alternative ingredient or mixing it with their favorite food. The company labeled their business as “Nightingale Chefs”, the name “Nightingale” was inspired by Florence Nightingale— a British nurse that is best known as the founder of Modern Nursing. According to Mullen, Onion, Sullivan, et al. (2020), Florence Nightingale improved hygiene practices during Crimean War, and that was foundational in her views about sanitation. Nurse-Entrepreneurs Co. assures the consumers that their products are clean, for it is prepared with proper hygiene practices. They also guarantee that the tools used for preparing their products are sanitized. The word “chefs” in their business title signifies that they themselves cook and prepare their products. NEC is also confident that their food and beverages are freshly made, and their natural ingredients are directly from our local farmers to help and support them in selling their local products that they worked hard for. The Nightingale Chefs’ products can be purchased at an affordable price because of the market demand. Many consumers prefer new or unique products that will satisfy their hunger so the NEC is sure that their products will be easily sold to their target market. The stall of Nightingale Chefs is located at a prominent shopping mall in Taytay. NEC plans to branch out and develop retail outlets outside Taytay so that they can reach consumers who want to try our products. This plan is prepared to obtain new locations for the initial launch of this concept. Additional financing will be needed to be secured for the two subsequent outlets, anticipated in the second year of establishing Nightingale Chefs. RATIONALE OR SIGNIFICANCE The fundamental reason of establishing Nightingale Chefs is to offer delicious treats that will not lead to food guilt. Their products are innovated, namely, siomalunggay, kamote munchkins, and honeymansi. These products are uniquely tasty and healthy in their own way. They intend to expand their business and formulate new products to offer to their consumers. Nightingale Chefs’ siomalunggay is a combination of “siomai” and “malunggay”. Despite of being a traditional Chinese dish, siomai is loved by us, Filipinos. These dumplings make a great snack or main dish— it become our go-to food when we don’t have budget to eat other snack or dish. Most of the students and employees try to save their money by buying “siomai rice”, and that’s the reason why they eat siomai almost every single day. However, according to Ong (2015), we can eat siomai from time to time, but we should not eat it every day. Four pieces of siomai contains 400 calories, which is like one full meal already, so siomai rice is not a healthy meal. You’ll most likely gain weight, and with the fats that you’ve intake from siomai, you might increase your risk to high cholesterol. The Nightingale Chefs doesn’t want you to feel deprived of eating your favorite food so they added malunggay to the mixture of siomai to assist your body when converting food into energy, as opposed to storing it as fat. Malunggay or Moringa oleifera is proven to have antiobesity and hypolipidemic activity against high fat diet-induced obesity in rats. According to Bais, Singh, and Sharma (2014), malunggay leaves are capable of preventing body weight gain, and it help our body in maintaining the current body weight. M. oleifera being beneficial to the weight management, the founders of Nightingale Chefs decided to add this to siomai for their consumers’ guilt-free eating. Nightingale Chefs also offer a dessert that is made from purple sweet potato or Ipomoea batatas, it is named as kamote munchkin. Regular munchkins are from doughnut hole, and according to Picincu (2018), doughnuts are calorie bombs loaded with sugar. Eating just one doughnut is unlikely to cause any harm. However, unless that doughnut is the only source of sugar in your diet, you might go overboard. Too much sugar can lead to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, insulin resistance and metabolic problems. To avoid this problem, Nurse-Entrepreneurs Company created Downloaded by Claire Josephine Batara (clairejosephine.batara@deped.gov.ph) lOMoARcPSD|16151452 an alternative to regular munchkins, it is a dessert that is healthy and sweet even without sugar. Nightingale Chefs offer two coatings; you can choose from nuts or coconut shreds. According to a Mayo Clinic Staff (2019), eating nuts as part of a healthy diet may be good for your heart so it is a great coating for your munchkin. According to McClees (2020), coconut is the tropical fruit that most of us relate to just an exotic healthy fat source is actually packed with nutrients that improve lean muscle mass and support the overall body. The shredded coconut meat is also a good coating for your munchkin. Nightingale Chefs also serve a drink that will quench your thirst and energize your body. It is a cold, sweet and citrusy drink called honeymansi. It is not just a regular calamansi juice, NEC used honey as an alternative sweetener to sugar. It is a perfect drink to boost your immune system for the global pandemic because according to Staughton (2020), calamansi or Citrofortunella macrocarpa is packed with vitamin C and other beneficial nutrients, calamansi juice has been used in folk medicine as an immune booster for generations. Carmody, Evanson, Gleason, et al. (2011) found that replacing sugar with honey could actually lower blood sugar levels and prevent weight gain or aid in weight loss, so honey is a great substitute for sugar as sweetener. Aside from serving these innovated products, the Nightingale Chefs also want to provide a solution for parents who are struggling to feed their children with healthy food. This factor was considered by Nurse-Entrepreneurs Company as a way to help parents by tricking their children into consuming vegetables or fruits by using it as a substitute ingredient or combining it with their favorite food. NEC also strive to reach beyond the economic return on investment, and aspire to a greater good. They set their sights on serving a higher purpose and making a significant impact on the world. In fact, NEC started helping and supporting local farmers by availing their local products that they have worked hard for. These products are used as ingredients to Nightingale Chefs’ delicious treats. NEC also plans to give the 6% of their annual income to the charity that they have chosen. So, if you are going to invest in NEC’s Nightingale Chefs, your money will give back to our community; you didn’t just gain profit but you will also be noted for your philanthropy. OBJECTIVES Nightingale Chefs serve a purpose of providing tasty treats that will not let you think twice before consuming. Nurse-Entrepreneurs Company want to make sure that their consumers enjoy what they serve without compromising their consumers’ health. They also offer a solution for parents who are having a difficult time to feed their children with nutritious food. NEC considered this factor to ease the struggle of parents by tricking the children into eating vegetables or fruits by using it as an alternative ingredient or mixing it with their favorite food. NEC assures the consumers that their products are clean, for it is prepared with proper hygiene practices. They also guarantee that the tools used for preparing their products are sanitized. Other than that, they have short-term and long-term objectives to aim. Their short-term objectives include branching out and developing retail outlets within Rizal. Franchising is open for all, especially for their co-nurses who also want to start a business while working in the hospital because they want to help other nurses to double their earnings. NEC also wants to create an opportunity for unemployed people by training and hiring them as their employee who will take charge of their retailed outlets. As their business grow, they also have a goal to give back to our community by giving the 6% of their annual profit to their chosen charity. NEC will most likely choose food charities to help malnourished children in the poor community of the Philippines. The growth of their business is also equivalent to more local farmers earning supplemental income because Nightingale Chefs’ ingredients were bought from them. Their long-term objectives don’t really differ from their short-term objectives; these objectives are like bigger version of the short-term ones. In the long run of the business, NEC targets to have branches outside Rizal. They don’t just want to reach other consumers who want to avail their products, they also want to help more people by applying what they did with their short-term objectives. Lastly, as nurses, they also desire to use their extra income to support aspiring nurses in college. It would really be accomplishing for them because they will help nursing students to reach their dream.
