Dear Mr. Kim,
① Hi. How do I look in the photo? It was taken when I visited Hollywood
with my host family.

② I am having a great time at Arroyo Seco High. The other exchange
students from Korea are also enjoying their time in California.

③ Everything is fantastic, except the language barrier.

② The only problem is the language barrier. Spanish is not as easy as I
thought.
❍ 유일한 문제점은 언어 장벽이에요. 스페인어는 제가 생각했던 것만큼 쉽지가 않아요.
③ I simply assumed that everything would be OK if I added an "a" or an
"o" right after an English word.
❍ 저는 단순히 영어 단어 바로 뒤에 "a"나 "o"를 붙이면 모든 것이 괜찮을 거라고 가정했었어요.

"sopa."

⑪ Yesterday, I had a sandwich at a cafe.

⑬ I know that "como" is "how", so I said, "Como mucho?" thinking I was
saying, "How much?"
❍ 저는 "como"가 “얼마”라는 의미인 것을 알고 있어서, “얼마예요?”라고 말한다고 생각하면서 "Como mucho?"라고 했어요.
⑭ The waiter just smiled and walked away. I tried "Como mucho" again
a few times, but then he brought me another sandwich!
❍ 종업원은 그냥 웃고 가 버렸어요. 저는 몇 번이나 다시 "Como mucho"라고 했는데, 그러자 그는 제게 샌드위치를 하나 더 가져
다주었어요.
⑮ When I checked my phrase book, I discovered that "Como mucho"
means "I eat a lot."
❍ 제가 일상 표현 사전을 확인해 봤을 때 "Como mucho"는 “나는 많이 먹어요.”라는 뜻이라는 것을 알게 됐어요.
⑯ "How much" is something completely different.
❍ “얼마예요?”라는 표현은 완전히 다른 것이지요.
⑰ Anyway, I am learning Spanish — slowly. The people here are great,
and I love Mexico.
❍ 어쨌든 저는 서서히 스페인 어를 배워 가고 있어요. 여기 사람들은 굉장히 친절하고 저는 멕시코가 매우 좋아요.

forefinger and wiggle it when something is absolutely delicious.

④ If I do that here in Korea, people don't understand the gesture at all.

⑤ They just think my earlobe is itchy for some reason.

that we are not allowed to use in Brazil (connecting the thumb and
forefinger into a circle).

것)을 했어.
⑧ I thought that I said something wrong, and that they were angry at
me.

⑨ Now, I know the gesture isn't rude like it is in Brazil and it means OK
in Korea.
❍ 이제 난 한국에서는 그 제스처가 브라질에서처럼 무례하다고 여겨지지 않고 OK라는 뜻이란 걸 알아.
⑩ My Korean friends used the gesture to tell me that I was doing
something good.

⑪ I am really beginning to love this country. I like Korean food — spicy
gimchi, delicious galbi, and everything else, too.

⑫ Well, I have to go now. I have a Korean lesson in about ten minutes.
