Read the passage “Running for School Council” before answering Numbers 1
through 10.
Running for School Council
Tameka fumbled with a set of papers as she got ready for school. Mom urged her to move
faster. Then she saw a worried look on her daughter’s face. “What is wrong, honey?” Mom
asked.
The fifth grader stared at the ground. She hesitated to tell her mom. Finally, she said, “I’m
gonna run for school council1. I filled out the application2 last night, and I am ready to turn it in
today. The problem is that I have not told Mary that I am doing this. She is my best friend. I am
afraid she will be upset that I will not have as much time to spend with her.”
Mom wondered what words of wisdom she could share with her daughter. Then she
said, “You and Mary have been friends for a long time. I think you will be able to keep your
friendship, even if you cannot spend as much time together.”
Tameka knew what words were coming next. She smiled as she said them with her mother:
“Change is a natural part of growing up.” Tameka kissed her mother on the cheek and rushed
out the door to catch the school bus.
When the bus arrived at school, Tameka hurried to the office to turn in her form for school
council. Two forms dropped into the box at exactly the same time. Tameka looked up to see
Mary standing next to her. Mary smiled and said, “I guess we’re in the same boat!” The girls
giggled. They realized that they had both kept a secret from their best friend. Now that the cat
was out of the bag, they talked about how they were worried about hurting each other’s feelings.
This made them realize just how strong their friendship was.
Mary and Tameka were running for different offices on the school council. They decided
that they would help each other prepare for the election. The girls made arrangements to meet
on Saturday to start planning their strategy.

When the weekend arrived, the girls met at Mary’s house. Tameka carefully unrolled the
two pieces of poster board she brought with her. Mary pulled out a box of colored markers.
Both girls made their required posters telling why they would make good candidates for the
council. Then they decorated their posters with pictures to show some of the things they would
do if elected. When they were done, they admired each other’s work.
On Monday, the girls hung their posters on the wall in the main hall. They were surprised
by the number of students running for the council. The walls were lined with posters by
students who had good ideas. The girls knew that it would be hard to win the election. However,
they were determined to serve on the council together.
The next step would be to get ready for the debate. It was going to be held next month. The
girls had a lot to learn. They needed to know how to have this type of discussion. They also
needed to learn about topics that the council would address. This would help them decide if
they were for or against each issue.
The girls studied. They practiced talking about their viewpoints. The days passed into weeks.
Finally, the big day was here. The girls sat on the stage. They smiled at each other. They waited
for their turn to share their points of view. At the end of the day, many students told Tameka and
Mary they had done a good job. The election was right around the corner. The girls were looking
forward to hearing the results. They knew that no matter what the outcome was, they would still
be best friends.
