Australian Curriculum Content Description: (see ACARA or SCASA)
Sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks contain minerals and are formed by processes that occur
within Earth over a variety of timescales (ACSSU153)

representing the stages in the formation of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, including
indications of timescales involved

heat and pressure, soils from Pearson and Cambridge book
Teaching purpose: To learn the process of rock formation and how it links together as the Rock Cycle

representing the stages in the formation of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, including
indications of timescales involved
Learning objectives:


Classifying / identifying rocks
Characteristics
Assessment: SS will be able to identify, describe and
draw the processes for each rock formation within
the rock cycle
Preparation and Resources:
-Cambridge text book page 316-319
-Collection of rocks from Tech Lab and Magnifying glasses
Catering for diversity (detail any adjustments or considerations for educational/resource adjustments)
Timing
Learning experiences
5mins
Write instructions on the board
Readings 316-319 Question 1-7
Introduction:
Greet SS at door
Give instructions for readings on the boards and complete work
15mins
Activity 1
-Reading pages 316-319
Book contains – Characteristics of rocks, test for classifying, shape size, hardness, behaviour,
common characteristics
-Take notes
-Draw table – characteristics of rocks
30mins
Activity 2
-SS to draw a grid to fill in information about rocks to be observed
-draw example on the board?
-Pencils, rulers can be found at the front
Rock name
Category (I,s,m)
Description
Drawing
-Hand out 3 selections of Igneous rock, whilst students are creating grid.
Use students on task to help hand out
-Questions:
Go through the first rocks to keep students on track
What similarities and common features have they found
-Early finishes can complete rock uses from previous lesson
-Pack away
Ask students to bring rocks, magnifying glasses up
-Questions:
5mins
Ask students to share what they have for each rock
What similarities do student see in each rock
Lesson Evaluation:
(Reflect on the lesson. What worked? What did not work? What would you change? Why? Only complete this section if you
actually taught the lesson)
Utilising students to assist in handing out rocks and equipment, lesson objective was met. During this lesson the class was quiet
loud and very disruptive (Last period 6) I need to bring the noise level down earlier on in the lesson. Move student in the first
activity to show what my expectations consist of.
A reward was used to bring student back on track, the student quickly reacted to seeing other students rewarded.
Need to have work to go on with, this work needs to be out prior to the start of the activity.
Be conscious of how long students can take to pack away.
