Part III. ANALYSIS. Directions: Based on the posted artwor
k of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Vitruvian Man, answer the questions below. (5 points each)
1.
What do you think does the artwork The Vitruvian Man mean to demonstrate?
Leonardo Da Vinci’s depiction of a male figure fully encircled and squared,
known as the “Vitruvian Man,” demonstrates what he considered to be a divine
relationship between the human form and the universe. It is one of the most recognized
photographs globally, beloved for its beauty and symbolic potency.
2. Is The Vitruvian Man by Da Vinci truly a commendable piece of art? Explain your
answer.
Yes. The Vitruvian Man is an exquisite synthesis of art and science that exhibits
Leonardo’s acute sense of proportion. It displays a male person in two superimposed
poses with his arms and legs spread apart and engraved in a circle and square
simultaneously. Leonardo Da Vinci’s seemingly simple pen and ink doodle on paper
attempts to solve an age-old geometric puzzle. Additionally, the picture is thought to be
an intelligent solution to the nature of man and a metaphor for the universe’s workings.
3. Does puzzle and mystery in an artwork add interest in the viewers? Clarify your claim.
Yes, puzzle and mystery in an artwork add interest in the viewers. By Leonardo
Da Vinci, Vitruvian Man is the ideal of a mystery artwork. When you make your point
very clear at all times, you wind up boring people. A successful artwork is as much
about what is hidden as it is about what is visible. Artwork like the Vitruvian Man
draws even the most apprehensive spectator into the artist’s world vision. The audience
is interested in the manner of voyeur. They are curious as to why. They are curious
about the story. Vitruvian Man is thought to be an intelligent solution to the nature of
man and a metaphor for the universe’s workings. It simply tells that the manner,
expression, and carriage of a subject all contribute to the overall composition.

4. What personal insights have you learned from Da Vinci’s The Vitruvian Man? How
can these be applied to your being a learner of Art Appreciation?
The Vitruvian Man, a late 15th-century drawing, intended to explore the idea of
proportion. The piece is part work of art and part mathematical diagram, conveying the
Old master’s belief that “everything connects to everything else. I have observed that the
human body’s proportion, including the fact that the navel is the body’s center, which can
be used to draw a perfect circle around the body, that a man’s height is nearly equal to his
arm span, and that a sketch of a body with arms outstretched fits perfectly inside a square.
This assertion that a human body could be contained with a circle and a square fascinated
Da Vinci.
We can apply these to our being a learner of Art Appreciation by giving a good
physical description of the artwork based on the knowledge of art element and materials;
analyzing the artwork in terms of what the artist wants in his artwork to represent an the
learner’s subjective reaction to the works which includes thoughts and feelings;
perceiving the work in the context of its history; giving meaning to the artwork based on
its description, analysis and context; and judging the artwork as to whether it is good or
bad based on the learner’s perception of it and its aesthetic and cultural value.
Part IV. REFLECTION. Directions: Expound on the following items reflecting on your
learning from Module 1. The following shall be used in grading your answer: content - 4
points, presentation - 4 points, grammar and diction - 2 points.
1. Art is universal and timeless.
Based on my learning from Module 1, art is a reflection of the individual and their
social milieu. Additionally, it bridges differences and heighten awareness. Countries
worldwide undertake cultural exchange programs centered on art to foster mutual
understanding among diverse cultures, nations and people. As a result, it should not be
classified as high or low.
While artist frequently produced for specific market, this does not stop others
from appreciating their work. If the art communicates and establishes a connection, it is
valuable. Commercial art does not have this capacity for harmony; it should not be
dismissed as unimportant simply because it is not ballet or opera. Regardless of their
form, all artistic creations have the power to speak with everybody. When we us the
labels “high” and “poor”, we lose sign of that possibility.
Furthermore, separation in art is analogous to social alienation. Art is a vital mode
of communication because it can connect the world and reflect on natural, cultural,
political, and social processes. Let art represents people, tradition, culture, liberty,
comprehension, unity and harmony.
Relatively, art is timeless. Art evolves from generation to generation, making it
progressive and accessible to everybody. It makes no difference when art is created or
found; as long as it can still be seen or touched today, it has not aged. Art is timeless
because people create it.

2.“Man is the measure of all things.” – Protagoras
The abovementioned statement is commonly believed to mean that humans are
the most valuable. We were formed first, conferring upon us the supreme value. Human
must have been formed first to uphold the values or whatever happened next and
because they, as humans, are ultimately responsible for the world’s order. If they were to
lose sight of their worth, the world would descend into chaos as they have recently
done.
It is considered that as a living human being, man is responsible for the planet and
how those below him, such as animals, insects, and so on, exist and are used. This
includes technology. Human invented technology to simplify complicated lives, not
allowing it to seize control of the labor force and human life in general. Technology has
been ingrained in the daily existence of the average human being.
To sum it up, this statement by Protagoras simply indicates that, for us, in our life
space, which is unquestionably accurate, things matter in proportion to how they relate
to us, what they are at the human scale, and what they make to us and what we can
make to them, not in general, nor in themselves.
