ME SOP The rapid growth in technology, especially the communication aspect, made me inquisitive towards it. To dive more into Telecommunications, gain in-depth knowledge, and explore the field, I am applying for a Master of Engineering, Antennas/Microwave Device. I have a keen interest in conducting my research and thereby, wish to not limit myself to just a master but also expand more to attaining a PhD and becoming a researcher in the field in the future. I believe studying this programme at the Michigan Technology will furbish my way to achieving my academic goals. I learnt the importance of technology at a very young age of 6. I was just 3 when I lost my dad due to sickness and lack of fund, but my mum insisted to ensure that she will give us basic of life that she didn’t get from her parents, which is education. In the course of my study, during my national diploma in Electrical Engineering, I also lost my mum in the year 2015 with same reason as that of my dad, which led me to do some minor job in order to further my education. In Nigeria, we lived in a typical rural area, where there were no mobile phones, no landline at home either. Here, I am not speaking of the 90s rather the early 2000s. The only way we could communicate with the rest of our family members over there was to travel about 10miles away from home to a telephone tower situated on a hill and use that one phone booth to make a call, which lasted just a few minutes and would cost a fortune. As I grew older, I realized the importance of technology and how rapidly it grows. We had big and heavy mobile phones with antenna, then phones without antenna but monochromatic, phones with cameras, then phones that could be used to access the internet, and the features keep increasing. All these got me interested in learning the technology behind it and that is when I made up my mind of becoming an engineer when I grow up. As soon as I graduated from high school even though, I met the cut-off marks required for Engineering in Nigeria, I did not immediately go for a university of my choice due to financial constraints. Thereby, I decided to duel into some part time job just to cater for my university fees meanwhile engaging myself into a diploma program on Electrical Engineering so as to retain and gain more knowledge before I could have enough funds to pay for my dream university. Once, I was able to do that, I wasted no time in selecting Telecommunication Engineering as my branch. I had my bachelor degree in Telecommunication Engineering from a reputed federal university in Nigeria, Bayero University, Kano. During this, I offered courses like Digital Signal Processing, Wireless communication Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Microwave Engineering, Software Engineering and System programming, and many more relevant courses that provide an edge for me to grab more from the academic aspect. I as well conducted my final year project which is titled “Design and Simulation of Microstrip Patch Antenna for Tri-Band 5G wireless communication using CST. I also designed, simulated and constructed mini school projects using Proteus, MATLAB, PIC, Arduino (UNO and Nano) Boards, ESP32, and Python Programming Language, alone as well as in groups. My overall performance, academically, had been excellent as I would always appear among the top 5% of the students in our class. My interest in the course not only reflected in my GPA but also got me awarded as the best student in my department with scholarships for two consecutive academic sessions. Moreover, I worked for 6 years between 2015-2021 including Industrial Attachment and whenever the is on break as an intern at Huawei Technologies Co. Nigeria Ltd. which is a renowned Telecommunications company. I was an intern under the Field Service Engineer Department where I worked on telecommunication sites and learnt the practical implementation of RF antennas, Microwave Antennas, Fibre optic cables, Ethernet cables and each element of the general GSM architecture. Furthermore, I participated in some extracurricular activities one of which include leading a team of 20 electrical engineering students to design and construct a prototype of an automatic solar irrigation system using Arduino UNO Board, which won a sum of one million Nigerian Naira in Project Shark Tank competition organized by Rural Electrification Agency, Energizing Education Programme. Also, collaborated with a team of 20 STEM male students to participate in the construction of a 7.1MW solar hybrid power plant (The largest off-grid solar hybrid power plant in Africa) at our University (Bayero University Kano) under the Energizing Education Programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria. Currently, I am a problem management engineer, handling the performance, analysis and maintenance of Microwave Device for both traditional microwave and E-Band Microwave at Huawei Technology, Lagos. Finally, my hard work paid off as I graduated with an Upper Second-Class Honours Degree in Bachelors of Telecommunication Engineering from Bayero University Kano, Nigeria, in September 2021. Since then, I knew it was not my stopping point and I grew more passionate about becoming a professional researcher in the field. On reading the course structure of this programme I applied for, I found out that it was the best programme for me to take on as it included all the areas I wish to explore more. What attracted me to study at the University was the reputation and ranking, and after browsing through the course structure on Telecommunication, I found all the modules I am particularly interested in, is present. The webpage showed me all the great things and people I will get to meet there as well. It is truly the best place where I could fulfil my dreams. I believe my above qualifications and passion for the course, make me a suitable candidate for a place in the course. I hope my application gets granted as I could never find a better programme and university to enhance my skills and fulfil my goals.
