Fragassi 1 Anna Fragassi Professor Heiden English 1001 042 10/7/20 Is Meat Truly Healthy? Diversity of all types is a huge issue in modern society. Without diversity of thought, the world would never progress. No medical discoveries would be made, and everyone would still believe that meat is a healthy food for humans. A documentary titled What the Health brings to light the subject of veganism and the health benefits surrounding this lifestyle. Many Americans suffer from diseases which force them to take a medication, specifically heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Studies show that a diet heavy with processed meats corelates to developing these diseases. This information would shock most citizens because the vast majority of people believe meat to be healthy and unproblematic to human health. This interesting documentary also uncovers the pure greed which drives the meat and pharmaceutical industries. The American Diabetes Association, The American Cancer Society, and The American Heart Association all approve of diets based on foods which have been proven to cause the disease which they are trying to prevent. The reason for this, as shown by What the Health, is because they all accept sponsorships from large meat companies. Throughout this documentary, the narrator attempts to interview hospital representatives to understand why plant-based diets are not pushed to prevent all these terrible diseases. One hospital’s reason for not meeting with the narrator was because the hospital made too much money from the surgeries associated with diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. This level of greed is absolutely baffling.
