This segment is further divided into four (4) sub-segments. Surface System ALI AWAN | INTERNEE MWD, LWD Motor RSS 4 FIRST SUB-SEGMENT SURFACE SYSTEM ALI AWAN | INTERNEE 5 SURFACE SYSTEM A surface system is a group of components that can be moved quickly from rig to rig as needed. The purpose of the surface system is to collect and process data about the drilling parameters during the drilling operation. Major components of Surface System are: • Sensors • Computers • Logging Unit ALI AWAN | INTERNEE 6 SENSORS The surface system uses surface sensors to collect data that is used to monitor the drilling operation. Surface Sensors include: Drawworks Encoder (DES) Clamp-Line Tensiometer (CLT) Signal Pressure Transducer (SPT) ALI AWAN | INTERNEE 7 SENSORS 1) Draw works Encoder (DES) • To measure depth, D&M installs a drawworks encoder. The drawworks encoder is connected to the draw works shaft. The rotating drawworks shaft spools out and reels in the fast line to raise and lower the traveling block. 2) Clamp-Line Tensiometer (CLT) • The clamp-line Tensiometer is installed on the deadline just above the anchor. Tension, caused by the weight of the drill string, forces the deadline against the sensor’s load cell. The greater the tension, the greater the pressure on the cell. 3) Signal Pressure Transducer (SPT) • The signal pressure transducer converts the mud pulses into an analog signal and sends it to the D&M surface computer for processing. ALI AWAN | INTERNEE 8 COMPUTERS The computer is an essential part of the surface system. It contains software that takes in data from the surface sensors and performs a variety of functions on that data. The computers used inside the logging unit are called IWS (IDEAL work station) computers. The logging unit contains two IWS computers, both of which have MaxWell and HSPM. ALI AWAN | INTERNEE 9 COMPUTERS Convert signal data from digital-to-binary to count to engineering form as needed. Some important functions performed by IWS computers Store data Demodulate MWD signals from downhole. Convert data to useful information and displays. Provide communication with the downhole tool at the surface when programming the tool or receiving data stored in the tool. ALI AWAN | INTERNEE 10 SOFTWARE'S • Toolscope is used to program the tool. Toolscope ALI AWAN | INTERNEE HSPM • HSPM is used for digitalizing and demodulating the signals. It is also used for the acquisition of the tool. • Maxwell software converts the data receiving from HSPM and then computes it. Maxwell 11 LOGGING UNIT (LLU & OLU) o The logging unit houses the surface system computers and other equipment, including the safety barrier enclosure (SBE) and the advanced signal acquisition processor (ASAP). o The logging unit provides office space for Drilling & Measurements (D&M) personnel. There are two (2) types of Logging Unit. 1. Land Logging Unit (LLU) 2. Offshore Logging Unit (OLU) ALI AWAN | INTERNEE 12 LLU PREPARATION 1) Connect one end of the sensor cables with each sensor separately. ALI AWAN | INTERNEE 2) Connect other end of the sensor cables with the junction box. 3) Take an umbellical cable. One end of the umbellical cable is connected with the junction box and other end is connected with the ESAM. 4) After all the connections are made than Toolscope software is run to modulate the signals generated by the sensors. 13 ACQUISITION & PROGRAMMING SYSTEM Sensors ROP (Read Out Port) UJB Umbellical Cable Acquisition System Sensor Cables LTB Modem TSIM 2 Fire wire Cable LTB Cable Programming System ESAM Ethernet IP MCMP ALI AWAN | INTERNEE 14 SECOND SUB-SEGMENT MEASUREMENT WHILE DRILLING AND LOGGING WHILE DRILLING ALI AWAN | INTERNEE 15 MEASUREMENT WHILE DRILLING o MWD is another sub-segment of D&M that is taking measurements while the process of drilling is underway. o MWD is considered as power bank, telemetry, direction and inclination indicator. o It provides real time data and information.
