10 Ways to Reduce Maths Anxiety 1.Confidence + Preparation = Success 2.You Are Not Alone! Many people, including Maths teachers and tutors, have Maths Anxiety when confronted with a new problem. 3.Ask Questions Some students are reluctant to ask questions in fear of looking stupid. Asking questions is a sign of strength and other students in the classroom will be glad that you asked (because they have questions too!) 4.There is More than One Way to Solve a Problem Do not give up. Work to understand the problem your way and then check it with your teacher. Remember, there is often more than one way to solve a Maths problem. 5.Overcome Negative Self Talk Perhaps one of the most important ways that you can do better is simply by having a positive attitude. Avoid negative self-talk. Set high expectations and rise to the occasion. 6.Read Your Maths Text A good practice is to read the section your teacher is planning to teach before going to the class. 7.Think of Maths as a Language It must be practiced daily for success. Always do your homework. You are building on a base of skills and concepts. 8.Develop Responsibilities for Your Success If you miss a class, be sure to get the class notes from a fellow student. If you miss something early on, it becomes more difficult to catch up. 9.Know the Basics Be sure to know your Maths from earlier years and classes. Maths builds on itself. You may have to go back and relearn material. Remember, it is never too late! 10.Use Different Resources To clarify any Maths confusion, you can refer to other Maths books, use flash cards, your notes, research the internet, create a study group and/or use available help from your teacher.
