Darren Friesen Grier Swerhone EADM 303 January 26, 2023 Opinion - Schooling and Education in 2075 CE Martin Luther King Jr. is quoted as saying that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice”. My thoughts about the future lean in the same direction. I believe that, although present circumstances are not ideal, justice, reconciliation, and goodness will win the day. In the year 2075 we will see education differently than we do today, but if justice wins out, it will be assisted by an education that allows for equity, growth, and creativity, and in developing citizens who look for the best in each other and themselves. Grassroots pressure will be the catalyst for updates in the practices of school administration, educational curriculum, and learning application. Accessibility and opportunity for all young people must be expanded to include all. The concept of what is “normal” is changing, and people of all faiths, cultures, languages, sexual orientations, and social must be valued and represented as. Part of this comes through electing governments that are socially minded and aware of the consequences of creating tiers of value regarding the status of human beings. Chomsky’s vision of education leading people to think for themselves is in its’ early stages, but it is happening. The key word is “think”. Students must be taught to think, and. With thinking comes the ability and allowance to ask difficult question: exploring the “why” behind the facts we have been comfortable with presenting in past generations. If people learn how to think, justice has a chance. There will be backlash as lines are drawn on both sides of the issue, so those who support inclusion must be prepared for a long journey that will need to be conducted with kindness for all, including those who do not agree. The place of government in the development of education will continue to be central. The idea of compromise is key and should be seen as a way for various sides see others’ opinions as valuable and necessary. Shared meaning can be achieved as we learn how to compromise. Young voters are not overly engaged in the process now, but we will begin to see an upswing I the participation of young people in grasping ideas and realizing that they have a voice though the democratic ability to vote. The divide between socialism and capitalism will expand, and I believe that care of all people will eventually win out over care of the individual. Seeking balance and allowing reason and stability to form the bedrock of the educational system, which allows for the inevitable change to come about without shaking educational foundations will be crucial, and not easy to accomplish. There are countries around the world that can and will lead the west in moving towards this. The results of of education will be seen in a surge of movement towards communication and respect between nations, although before this there will be struggles between those who believe in equity and those who wish for their status to continue. Thought and creativity is at the core of education, and the use of technology will eventually take its’ proper place as a servant of the people instead of rivaling for their mastery. Present educational systems are witnessing a “tug-of-war” between those who are unaware of the pitfalls associated with information overload and those who are seeking to make sense of the information we have at our disposal. I am not sure what 2075 will look like. I am hopeful that education will influence our ability to think, create, and bring equity to all corners of the globe. I believe in justice, and this seems like the most likely way forward. Of course, I could be wrong.
