ACTIVITY#1
Philosophy - Chief Aims
The critical
scrutiny of our
beliefs and
convictions
Bringing to light of
our hidden
assumptions or
presuppositions.
Reflecting on
these beliefs - on
what they mean,
on whether they
are true or false,
on what their
implications are,
on what life would
be like if they were
true (or if we
believed them),
assumptions to
which we often
appeal in order to
justify these
ordinary beliefs as long as we are
unaware of our
assumptions we
are not
intellectually free
The quest for a
genuinely
worthwhile life
“An unexamined
life is not worth
living.” – Socrates
The effort to keep
alive our sense of
wonder about the
world
Questions:
human beings,
are naturally
curious - such
activity makes us
to think seriously what we are –
about what to be; human beings, not
about what to do mere animals.
with his or her life;
about what things
are most
important
The posing of
certain questions
which are not
dealt with by other
disciplines, and
the attempt to
answer them
In science, we
ask questions;
in philosophy,
we find
ourselves
questioned.
the pursuit of
philosophy
involves
asking a lot of
questions.
Philosophy - Themes of philosophy of Man
Theme
Elaboration/Meaning
Man as Embodied
Subjectivity
our basis for understanding human nature must be holistic - Man is
foremost a subjectivity, a unique core or center, source, depth,
well-spring of initiative and meaning.
Man as Being-in-the-world
As embodied subject, man is a being-in-the-world. The human
body is the link of man with the world
Man as Being-with; the Inter
human and the Social
The world of man, of course, is not just the world of things but also
the world of fellowman
Man as a PERSON whose
crowning activity is LOVE
which presupposes justice
“Person” is the task of becoming oneself. Th individuality of man is
one that he has to become freely and consciously in time, in the
world. - values are objects of intentional feeling which is different
from feeling-states. Values are reasons of the heart, not of the
mind. They are not imparted by a communication of minds but by
a meeting of persons, in concrete, by models or exemplars.
What Does it mean to Philosophize?
A crucial element in thinking is INSIGHT.
a kind of seeing with the mind.
(to see the point)
Two things to be considered with regard to an insight:
A.The insight itself
B. What I do with the insight
Insight
Why do we Philosophize?
Depending on the level of experience, there are three
levels of inquiry: Common sense. Scientific, Philosophical.
