ACCRA TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF APPLIED SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY NANA EKOW BUDU-MANUEL REPORT VITUAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME CHAPTER ONE Introduction/Background It is very necessary as a technical university to undertake industrial attachment. However due to the competition for space out there in the field, not all students gain entry into companies for the needed internship, hence the ingenuity of the leaders of the school to come up with V.I.P. to help students. The Virtual Internship Program has been active for two years now and hopefully would grow into a much better state. The help provided to students is really something to write home about. Objective of the industrial Attachment ✓ To enable students have exposure to the industrial field work pertaining to the field of study. ✓ To gain personal interactions with field experts. ✓ To help build a formidable resume/track record of work experience. CHAPTER TWO Description of the nature of work at the department/unit/section student was assigned Performing of experiments as well as research and analysis of information on given sectors in the pharmaceutical industry. Detailed account of work performed. Research/investigation on how waste is handled in the laboratories of S.L.T. department. Industrial analysis of flow chart and floor plans. Investigation on the calibration of the instruments in the S.L.T. laboratories. Acid/base balancing of food and drugs. Quality laboratory check/ audit list. Experiment on tablet weight uniformity test(Paracetamol,Ibuprofen, Folic acid, multivitamins and B. Complex) ➢ Preparation of waste management plan for A.T.U. S.L.T. laboratories. ➢ Preparation of maintenance manual/ schedule for instruments in A.T.U. S.L.T. Laboratories. ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ General observation (new knowledge/skills) Visitations was only one though we were able to appreciate an actual pharmaceutical company under construction(Alive Pharmacy, on the Accra- Motoway) CHAPTER THREE New knowledge/ skill acquired and challenges encountered New skills • • Ability to analyze industrial flow charts and floor plans, identify defects and offer appropriate advice on solution to defects. Ability to perform high class laboratory audit and investigations on proper management practices. Challenges Laziness and unserious attitude of some colleagues and their inability to take initiatives during groupwork given. Contribution by student to improve the organization (value addition) General observation It was observed that though the program was interesting and educative. The resource person was quite knowledgeable and versatile. The flexibility almost turned into boredom. CHAPTER FOUR Conclusion The internship program was interesting though quite short. Despite the stipulated period given, the program was interactive and engaging. Students were exposed to aspects of industry and had our myths on the industry debunked as the “stereotypic mindset” on going only the hospital (microbial) way was challenged for the better and bigger picture. Recommendation It would be very helpful if in the subsequent years to come in this program, the duration was increased and the practical aspect(hands on) be made a top priority especially in our department as Science Laboratory Technologists seeing that its quite a competitive world out there.
