Since middle school my dream career has been to become a school psychologist. I had the most amazing middle school counselor who became a very important mentor in my life. I was able to connect with her and she was able to help me grow both academically and socially, I hope to be a blessing like that one day. That is the main reason I chose psychology as a major while attending Bowie State University. Whenever I am thinking of procrastinating on an assignment, or just simply lacking motivation, I stop and think of my end goal and it helps me get back on track. Being a positive influence on one child like my middle school counselor was for me will make all the years of college worthwhile. Another reason I chose psychology as a major is because I want to help erase the stigma behind mental health. People who are given psychiatric diagnoses experience some of the worst prejudice and discrimination, especially in the black community. They are met with preconceived stereotypes in all aspects of their life. They are prejudged in their careers, relationships and in public life in general. I want to help research the causes of underlying conditions and help develop effective interventions to help people cope and be a valuable, respected member of society. Bowie State University has been an amazing institution. I feel blessed that I am able to attend an in-state university that provides all the academic and social resources to be successful and still be close to home to have my support system nearby. I am a member of the Women’s Basketball team. Being a part of the team further engages me to the university and provides me the opportunity to be a leader and contributing community member on campus. This scholarship is important to me as it will help me continue my college education, pursue my career goals and help to take some of the financial burden off of my parents. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship and will be thankful if any scholarship funds are awarded to me. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship opportunity.
