This time, you will learn about general and specific statements.
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to

distinguish between general and specific statements.


expression.

General statements cover a broad group of ideas and it needs supporting
statements in order to fully understand it. General Statements are commonly the
topic sentence of a paragraph. It tells us what the passage is mostly about.
Specific Statements, on the other hand, are the supporting statements for the
topic sentence. It provides definite information to support the topic sentence.
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
There are many habits that we can do in order to keep our body
safe from various diseases. Washing our hands regularly keeps the germs
and bad bacteria from spoiling the food that we eat. Eating colorful fruits
and leafy greens boosts our immune system. Exercising regularly
strengthens our bones and muscles. Doing these activities frequently keeps
our body strong and healthy and away from various kinds of diseases.
1. What is the passage all about?
2. What are the habits that we can do to keep our body safe from various diseases?
The first sentence in the paragraph is the general statement. The succeeding
sentences which enumerates the habits that one can do to keep the body safe
from various diseases are the specific statements. These specific statements provide
further information about the first sentence in the paragraph.
In a paragraph, you can distinguish between the general statement and the
specific statement based on how the passage is written. Most often, the general
statement or the topic sentence is written at the beginning of a paragraph. The
succeeding sentences are the specific statements which tell more information
about the general statement.
Let us distinguish the general statement and specific statements in the

Sardinella tawilis is a freshwater sardine found only in the Philippines.
It is the only member of the genus Sardinella known to exist entirely in fresh

have a single, triangular dorsal fin and a forked caudal fin. They possess

The Coconut Palm Tree is called “Tree of Life” for its versatility and
numerous uses. The different parts of the tree can be used to provide for the
human life. The coconut meat can be ground and mixed with water to make
coconut milk which is used in cooking. Other than the coconut kernels and the
drink that we can get from green nuts, the harvested coconut also produces
copra from which coconut oil is extracted. The coco coir from the dry husk is
used in producing ropes, mats, baskets, brushes, and brooms.
