The decision making of the group was logical because the outcome that they had
was good where the remaining survivors were saved. There are a lot of good decisions
that was made which was establishing a base of operations or a temporary shelter
(provides resting place for the helpers and injured), they did not split (decreases losing
someone), good moral support (able to psychologically maintain the group), rations
supply (food lasted longer), and utilizing the things that remains of the plain crash.
But there are also some bad decisions that they made or the things that I did not
see or read about them which is they did not think of the worst possible outcome, might
not have surveyed the area, and they became optimistic of being saved in a span of time.
If I was there my first decision is to think of the worst possible outcome which is the
assumption that we will not be saved, but I know that being saved is a possibility that is
likely to happen, but in order to speed up the saving process there should be a team of
explorers to get some help because the circumstances is dire for the others that have
fatal injuries. I will apply this assumption because the chances of survival once the
supplies are expensed will be harder to survive as time passes. In the case of people
dying for avalanches I think it was because the people had not surveyed the area and
prepared a contingency plan, it might be that it is hard to predict this catastrophe from
afar since it is in the place of high altitude but there might also be other shelters aside
from the temporary shelter or they can develop a plan for escape incase the avalanche
happens. Being optimistic is ok because it keeps the people psychologically intact, but
the problem with their optimism is they wasted some time in one place and just decided
to wait for rescue for one to two weeks before making a move.
There are things that they have done to make up some maybe faulty decisions
which was the group decided to assign a team to seek rescue and then capitalize or focus
their resources on them. Because of this the team was able to travel the harsh trails of
the mountain for ten days. Another thing that they have done to make up for poor decision
making is substitution for their food sources which is cannibalism. More lives could be
gone if it was not for this disturbing decision.
