In the west of the Veneto region lies Verona, a famous city since Shakespeare set the
story of Romeo and Juliet there.

CHARACTERS
1. Who are the main characters?
Romeo Montesco, Julieta Capuleto.
2. Who are the minor characters? What is their function? Explain who they are.
Fray Lorenzo: He is the religious in charge of marrying the secret lovers. He is kind and helps
the young in any way he can, as he believes that families are wrong to be at odds with each
other. It is his idea to fake the young woman's death to try to save their love.
Mercury: He is Romeo's best friend. Due to his death at the hands of Teobaldo, Romeo,
blinded by rage, kills him and is sentenced to exile. Mercury is always with Romeo, advising
him like a good friend.
Theobald Capulet: Juliet's cousin. He deeply hates the Montagues and by killing Mercury in a
mean way, he condemns himself to death, since Romeo is forced to avenge the unjust death of
his friend.
The Mistress: Young Juliet's nurse, is her confessor and is aware of Juliet and Romeo's
dalliances. The Mistress watches over the young woman's safety and advises her to leave the
young Montague after he had to go into exile and to marry Paris.
Count Paris: Juliet's suitor. Educated, of good family and social position. He is well received
by the Capulet family, which intends to marry him to Juliet, which is why he fights with Romeo
and dies.
