Unit Topic: Concept of disaster/ Disaster Risk
Day 1
Concept of Disaster
You probably have become used to hearing news about typhoons, earthquakes, or volcanic
eruptions happening every now and then. Many of us might have also experienced disasters due to
one or more of these natural events that they are no longer considered news. Why is the
Philippines one of the world’s most disaster- prone countries? Surely, it is not simply because
natural events visit us so often. The occurrence of a disaster depends on the interplay between a
natural phenomenon (that can turn into a hazard) and the vulnerability of populations exposed
(exposure and vulnerability).
Day 2
Disaster Risk
Recognizing that no two persons are alike helps us relate to different kinds of people.
In the same manner, no two disasters are alike. Some are definitely similar, but
appreciating their differences in terms of their nature and magnitude of triggering
hazards, exposed elements at risk, and vulnerabilities will help us deal with potential
disasters. The risks associated with disasters can be estimated and expressed either
quantitatively or in relative terms. This provides a way of comparing past and future
disasters.

3. Each group with at least five members shall discuss one natural phenomenon. Create a
profile for each event using the following questions.
a. Where does this kind of event occur?
b. what causes the natural phenomenon?
c. How much warning is given?
d. can it cause harm to people and the environment?

DEEPEN (MAKE MEANING)
Formulate a qualitative risk map from the analysis of hazard, exposure, and
vulnerability.
Map made by a nearby research institute shows the combined exposure and vulnerability of all
buildings in the area.
a. Considering both this map and the landslide hazard map, mark in red the residental areas with
the highest risk on the risk map provided.
b. Likewise, mark in blue the area with the lowest risk. Explain the significance of these two
areas.
c. where would you advise interested entities to purchase an existing residential or commercial
building? Explain your choice.

PERFORMANCE
STANDARD:
TRANSFER

LPO1: I am a mindful, self-directed learner and role model, consciously expressing my Faith.
Performance Task
Learning
Targets:
Day 1
Section Assessment
I can Explain
I can Asses
1. Name three natural phenomena that your community consider as hazards. Explain why
they are considered as hazards.
2. Explain the meaning of “buildings kill people, not earthquakes.”
3. Does the large magnitude of a natural hazard guarantee a disaster? Why or why not?
4. Explain how a seemingly harmless normal river flowing in the middle of a rapidly
developing city can cause a disaster in the future
Value Integration:
“sometimes it takes a natural disaster to reveal a social disaster.”
