State the Topic Objective
Gaming can become an addiction very easily, as technology advances gaming becomes a
more popular hobby for today’s youth; some have a tough time leaving this virtual world,
wishing that they could live in the games that they are playing.
Elaborate on the Topic
People’s motivations to play video games are varied, but all of the people who play tend
to enjoy themselves. Not all who play will get addicted, but in today’s society, more are
addicted than ever before. In this Article Review, we will look at those who are addicted,
and the causes for their addiction. The video game industry has seen an amazing amount
of growth this past year, making this topic more relevant than ever.
Exemplify the Topic
From a study in China, it states that one-third of mentally ill patients who stay at home
are addicted to the Internet, which falls into a similar category as video games. Tragic
things can happen when someone becomes addicted to a game, such as “a young Korean
man who collapsed at an Internet café in 2005 and went into cardiac arrest after playing
StarCraft (1998) for 50 h straight…(Albrecht, 110).” This is an extreme example, but the
article goes on to list more instances where people let their love of video games get them
hurt.
Illustrate the Topic
Gaming as an addiction is very similar to those who are addicted to drugs. This may seem
farfetched, but a lot of the negative effects of gaming show up with drug addicts as well.
This includes the time drain that they both are, the financial drain when having to buy
new games or drugs, and the lack of a social life when partaking copious amounts of
either.
