The Miserable Life of a Refugee What is a refugee? A refugee is someone that has left their country due to war, violence, or to escape the bad economic life their country has. Most of the refugees in the world are Syrian and they normally flee to countries like Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey and other neighbouring areas. Ever since the Syrian civil war, Syrian women have been mistreated and abused everywhere they go from refugee camps to amazing houses and reading this article made me realize its worse than I thought. As a Lebanese citizen, I’ve always seen Syrian refugees around, but I have never noticed that its mainly men I see until now. The women are forced to stay in the camps or at home and are never given the freedom to even speak up for themselves. Reading this article really shows how woman are being discriminated against and how they are not receiving the right resources to fight this. personally, I think the process of fixing this could take years if not decades and being unable to speak or fight is making it harder for the victims. After living here for almost six years, I have witnessed many young Syrian woman as little as thirteen years old being sold for a very small amount of money. A man that used to work for my father’s friend once bought a seventeen-year-old wife for three million Lebanese pounds when the dollar was about eighteen thousand Lebanese liras. This is just one of the many unfortunate cases happening all over the world and its very disappointing to see that barely any help is being provided to anyone in need. In the end, reading this article has reminded me of the many articles I’ve read and the many cases of discrimination I’ve witnessed in the past, unless governments try to do something to fix this mess and traditions change, young women’s lives will continue to be ruined by the incompetent parents they have to live with. Selling your daughters for money is something that should be punishable in ways to scare others from doing it or this problem would never vanish.
