This valuable program is designed for nursing students and is intended to bridge the
transition from academia to clinical practice through continuing education and
networking opportunities.
Step #1: You will need to register for this free program. Here is the link:
https://www.cognitoforms.com/MontanaAHEC/NEXTHealthcareLeadersRegistration
Step #2: The sessions are held on Thursdays 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. MST and the series
will run from January 19th through March 2nd, 2023 via Zoom. If you cannot make the
live session, that is fine, they are recorded.
Step #3: Listen to the Session
Step #4: Do a write up on the session that covers these points.
1. Did you attend the session live or listen to the recording?
a. I had the original lunch and learned during the live session! I was able
to eat lunch and partake in the information presented.
2. What topics were covered?
a. St. James Healthcare took the time today to explain the awesome work
opportunities, that they provide to new nursing graduates. St. James is
located in Butte, Montana and is the 5th largest city. Debbie spoke
highly about nursing culture which has the goal that “people help
people”. Providing safe care to both patients and staff. St. James is
offering a 35,000-dollar hiring incentive package, and a 15,000 dollar
sign on bonus, as well as loan forgiveness. There is a 12-week
orientation in which, in the first week new grad RNs are in the
classroom learning about skills, equipment and the EHM. The next
eleven weeks, the orientee is working with their preceptors. St. James
is partner with visitant, for learning about newer skills and personal
skills as well as gaining EBP knowledge. This facility also believes in
the importance of learning through education. They set aside “CBA”
money to help provide nurses with new learning opportunities. St.
James partakes in many community events, such as caring for the
community as a founding mission to the facility. Debbie also spoke
about the hospital goals, of supporting individuals in all of the social
determinants of health.
b. Ted, from Ruby Valley Medical Center, spoke highly about the
philosophy that the hospital offers at the critical level. He spoke about
the strong teamwork capabilities and great communication skills that
are needed within the facility. Recently, they have incorporated Health
Streams and further education benefits such as for offering tuition
insistence. Due to Ruby Valley being in a frontier area, many of the
nurses must be trained in trauma as they are also a certified trauma
receiving facility. His coworker mentioned that their community
involvement is active by involving both their high school students in
career shadowing.
c. Justin, from Montana State Hospital, spoke about the hospital’s
benefits, housing, relocation, orientation, and professional
advancement. He spoke about the struggles that have occurred due to
COVID when treating psychiatric patients. Justin discussed the lowcost insurance programs and the state wellness incentives too. The
Montana State Hospital does have loan repayments and
reimbursement. They also have “nursing dorms”, for individuals to
come and live in while working. Many of the patients within the
hospital are living there long term, while others graduate through time
and then graduate to group homes. Lastly, he spoke about the other
treatments that are taken care of at the hospital that include long term
disease or health issues.
3. How does this apply to you as you are preparing to graduate and become a
nurse?
a. As having an interest in critical care access hospital nursing, I was
happy to know what they look for in individuals that apply. It was also
very informative to know about the certification that is preferred and
that will need to be accomplished within the first year of work.
b. St. James’s presentation had me very excited to partake in my L&D
capstone there come this spring. Debbie speaking highly about the
culture and their missions and goals sparked my interest in possibly
working there after graduation.
c. Opportunities such as these networking events help me gather new
information and start the path in which I can get a foot in the door.
4. Formulate two questions you would ask the speaker.
What is the culture like working at Montana State Hospital? Is there an opportunity for
community involvement?
Ruby Valley, what do you look for in new graduates during the interview process?
Certain soft or hard skill?
Step #5: Turn into Moodle inbox by 2359 on the Sunday following the session.
*These papers should be between 300-400 words and be grammatically correct with
genuine reflection.
*For every session, you should be turning in a write-up.
