Introduction Basketball, colloquially referred to as hoops, is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball. As rank number 2 sport in Europe, but in the Philippines it marks as the top sport played. One of the most thrilling, breathtaking, exciting kind of team sport event is Basketball. In Asia, Philippines is known to be one of the great competitor in the field of basketball. The country is now producing highly competitive players and coaches that can go along with the foreign countries in playing this event. Lesson 1: At the end of the lesson, you are expected to: 1. discuss the historical background and development of basketball. 2. identify the great contributors in the development of the game basketball. 3. appreciate the importance of knowing the history of basketball. Lesson 1: History of Basketball Introduction Basketball, game played between two teams of five players each on a rectangular court, usually indoors. Each team tries to score by tossing the ball through the opponent’s goal, an elevated horizontal hoop and net called a basket. Each team is composed of 15 players although only 5 players at a time, any number of substitutions can be made at any time during the game. Substitutes must report to the scorer and wait to be beckoned by the referee. One of the players is the team captain and may address the officials on matters of interpretation or information. Any player may request for a timeout. Two or three referees officiate the game. Other table officials include a timekeeper, a recorder, and scoreboard scorer. ORIGIN OF THE GAME Dr. James Naismith, a physical educator at the YMCA at Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891, first introduced basketball. It is a fast moving, high leaping, and exciting game. It is easy to play, easy to follow, and can be played indoor or outdoor. Lesson 2: Facilities and Equipment Lesson 2 FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT At the end of the lesson, you are expected to: 1. discuss the facilities and equipments used in basketball 2. identify the standard measurement of each facility and equipment. 3. Draw and label the parts of basketball court The playing area of basketball is called the COURT. The court measure a maximum of 28 meters long and 15 meters wide. Lesson 3: Basic Skills Lesson 3 BASIC SKILLS At the end of the lesson, you are expected to: 1. discuss the different basic skills used in basketball. 2. identify the proper mechanics and techniques in performing the basic skills. 3. Perform the basic skills in basketball. 1. PASSING – good passing is necessary to maintain possessions of the ball and the quickest way to move the ball. the key to an effective offense is accuracy in passing. a. CHEST PASS – This is the most commonly used pass. The chest pass should be received chest high. b. BOUNCE PASS- This is short distance pass to avoid interception when player is closely guarded. c. OVERHEAD PASS- This is used to pass over a post-defensive player or a center. A player who is taller than the defending opponent best utilized this pass. d. BASEBALL PASS- This is frequently used to cover long distances, usually in fast breaks. 2. DRIBBLING – is slower than passing as means of moving the ball and it should not be overused. a. HIGH-SPEED DRIBBLE- This is used when the player is unguarded and moving quickly, leading a fast break, and driving to the basket without opposition. A full running stride is used b. LOW-CONTROL DRIBBLE- This is used when a player is closely guarded or in a congested area. c. CROSSOVER DRIBBLE- This skill is used when a player wanted to change directions. This is done very quickly and with only one bounce to avoid interception. 3. SHOOTING- The primary purpose of the game is to score goals. The effectiveness of a player is to be able to shoot a variety of shots from varying distances. a. ONE-HAND SET SHOT- This shot is used for long shots and when shooting free throws. b. JUMP SHOT- This is very effective offensive shot due to its high point of release. c. HOOK SHOT- This is the most difficult shot and the hardest to block. The key to making the hook shot is the follow-through. d. LAY-UP SHOT- This is used when a player is running toward the basket It involved the principles of opposition, that is, if you shoot from the right side, the take-off is with the left foot and vice-versa. e. DUNK-A slam dunk, also simply dunk, is a type of basketball shot that is performed when a player jumps in the air, controls the ball above the horizontal plane of the rim, and scores by putting the ball directly through the basket with one or both hands above the rim. 4. REBOUNDING – is gaining possession of the ball after an unsuccessful shooting attempt. It is an essential skill to any team as almost 60% of field goals attempts are missed. Rebounding is either defensive (at opponent’s court) or offensive (at your own team’s basket). The keys to effective rebounding are positioning, aggressiveness, and timing of the jump. Positioning for the rebound is called “BLOCKING” or “BOXING OUT”. Blocking is done by pivoting to face the basket, putting the opponent behind you. The rebounder should jump high and gasp the ball firmly with bouth hands.
