BASIC SKILLS
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
1. discuss the different basic skills used in basketball.
2. identify the proper mechanics and techniques in performing the basic skills.
3. Perform the basic skills in basketball.
1. PASSING – good passing is necessary to maintain possessions of the ball and the
quickest way to move the ball. the key to an effective offense is accuracy in passing.
a. CHEST PASS – This is the most commonly used pass. The chest pass should
be received chest high.
b. BOUNCE PASS- This is short distance pass to avoid interception when player is
closely guarded.
c. OVERHEAD PASS- This is used to pass over a post-defensive player or a
center. A player who is taller than the defending opponent best utilized this pass.
d. BASEBALL PASS- This is frequently used to cover long distances, usually in
fast breaks.
2. DRIBBLING – is slower than passing as means of moving the ball and it should not
be overused.
a. HIGH-SPEED DRIBBLE- This is used when the player is unguarded and moving
quickly, leading a fast break, and driving to the basket without opposition. A full
running stride is used
b. LOW-CONTROL DRIBBLE- This is used when a player is closely guarded or in
a congested area.
c. CROSSOVER DRIBBLE- This skill is used when a player wanted to change
directions. This is done very quickly and with only one bounce to avoid
interception.
3. SHOOTING- The primary purpose of the game is to score goals. The effectiveness
of a player is to be able to shoot a variety of shots from varying distances.
a. ONE-HAND SET SHOT- This shot is used for long shots and when shooting free
throws.
b. JUMP SHOT- This is very effective offensive shot due to its high point of
release.
c. HOOK SHOT- This is the most difficult shot and the hardest to block. The key to
making the hook shot is the follow-through.
d. LAY-UP SHOT- This is used when a player is running
toward the basket It involved the principles of opposition,
that is, if you shoot from the right side, the take-off is with
the left foot and vice-versa.
e. DUNK-A slam dunk, also simply dunk, is a type
of basketball shot that is performed when a player jumps in
the air, controls the ball above the horizontal plane of the
rim, and scores by putting the ball directly through the
basket with one or both hands above the rim.
4. REBOUNDING – is gaining possession of the ball after an unsuccessful shooting
attempt. It is an essential skill to any team as almost 60% of field goals attempts are
missed. Rebounding is either defensive (at opponent’s court) or offensive (at your
own team’s basket). The keys to effective rebounding are positioning,
aggressiveness, and timing of the jump.
Positioning for the rebound is called “BLOCKING” or “BOXING OUT”. Blocking is
done by pivoting to face the basket, putting the opponent behind you. The rebounder
should jump high and gasp the ball firmly with bouth hands.
